omegabyr
I have an EMC DL3D 1500 NAS that I am sending back to EMC. We got a quote from EMC for 70k to wipe the device!!? We do not want to pay that much. Any ideas? The array has 12TB of space.
Packet1009
do you have access to the command line? there's a navicli command that works on SAN's. Should be the same on the NAS side as long as you can get to that console. navicli -h <SP IP> zerodisk -messner B E D B Bus E Enclosure D Disk usage: zerodisk disk-names [start|stop|status|getzeromark] sample: navicli -h 10.10.10.10 zerodisk -messner 1_1_12 if you don't have that, another way is to attach the SAN to a linux or windows host and give it very large LUN's. If linux based, run dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdX bs=1M (where X = the drive) if windows based, cipher /w will do the same job
+BudMan MVC Posted November 19, 2012 MVC Share Posted November 19, 2012 What kind of disks? I would assume you could connect to computer outside of the NAS? According to this they are SATA http://www.emc.com/c...500-3000-ss.pdf If you can not use some command like packet1009 spelled out, then just pull the things and connect to any computer and run whatever wipe software you want, dban, cipher.exe /w or DD or sdelete, etc. etc. From the spec sheet looks like they are 1TB drive - so there really can not be that many if you have 12TB array. Not going to be real quick - but even if you spend full few days doing nothing but this - your not going to be anywhere close to $70K??? Tell you what, I will FLY there first class! I don't care where and do it for you for $20K ;) Your in Iowa -- ok, I would just drive, so $10K would cover it ;) I could stay at the best hotel in town, eat at best places in town. And buy drinks for IT dept as long as there at lunch and dinner - and still come home with plenty of profit for the few days have to spend in Iowa ;)
omegabyr
I did think that 70k was a little outrageous, but there are a total of 13 devices that would need to be wiped. I wouldnt mind taking all 22 disks out, mounting them in an old desktop, then DBAN them, but I dont think corporate would like that one all that much. Corparate is asking us to figure out ways to wipe these devices, sounds like they are leaning towards re-arranging all of the drives, then re-initializing the array with a different stripe size. I do like the idea of you driving out to Iowa, I get free lunch/dinner and drinks, works out great for me!

The_Observer
would Darik's Boot And Nuke do the job? http://www.dban.org/. If you want, pay for flights and hotel room and ill do it for free, alot cheaper then 70k
articuno1au
I like DBAN, but in this case I'd be amazed is the NAS doesn't have a secure wipe command. Was the first reply of any help?
+BudMan MVC Posted November 19, 2012 MVC Share Posted November 19, 2012 Where is the other location? $20K is looking good still as budget ;) 70K is just plain nuts!! WTF someone going to hand take apart each drive and sand paper the platters by hand while eating caviar and drinking dom on your dime while smoking the finest hand rolled on the thighs of virgin cigars and earning $1000 an hour? While still providing a profit to the company? ButteIrishProud 1 Share
