What Applications do you HAVE to have after a fresh Linux install?

Recommended Posts

The first thing I do after updating a new install is get the applications I really 'need' to complete the install.

Unless already installed by default, I make sure to install the following...

AWN

Cairo Dock (If AWN is not available)

Docky (If AWN and Cairo Dock are not available)

Rar/Unrar

7Zip

gThumb

GIMP

Firefox

Google Chrome

Qbittorrent

Gnomebaker

VLC

SMplayer

Openshot

PiTiVi (If Openshot is not available)

DeaDBeeF

Clementine

Soundconverter

EasyTag

Audacity

LibreOffice

Abiword (If LibreOffice is not available)

I run all my "linuxes" in virtualbox, so I don't need that many apps. Just need stuff for designing themes, icons and stuff.

After an install of Gnome it's basically just this:

pacman -Sy gedit file-roller unrar p7zip unzip gnome-terminal gimp inkscape eog opera yaourt gtk-engines gtk-engine-murrine

And then some packages from AUR:

freetype2-infinality, fontconfig-infinality, awf

Chromium

MusicBrainz Picard (Use this first to tag and then EasyTag for manual/custom changes)

Htop

Calibre

Inkscape (Also GIMP, has been mentioned in other posts)

Handbrake

VIM (vi improved)

projectM

XBMC (If your PC is used for everything!)

BleachBit

Banshee (Has been causing a few problems in ARCH Linux of late, but can be fixed. It still has the best layout of all Linux Music Players, for me anyway!)

That's my list. :)

Claws Mail + extra plugins

Evince

Unrar

P7zip

scrot

I'm sure I missed a few.

  • 2 weeks later...

Terminator

Google Chrome

Pidgin

VLC

Eclipse

Then I immediately uninstall LibreOffice and GIMP because they're so awful and just take up space

If those are part of the default install then why remove them? you could break something.
