Inmate Busted for Running Multi-Million Dollar Porn Business From Jail

(WXYZ) - A prisoner in the Wayne County Jail has been caught using his cell as a home office for his multi-million dollar porn business. The Wayne County Sheriff?s department that administers jail operations blames an employee, a 26-year veteran who has since been fired.

Rene Newell was a civilian worker, not a uniformed deputy. She was the director of compliance at the downtown jail facility. She was fired earlier this year, but soon after her dismissal she filed a whistle blower lawsuit. Rene tells 7 Action News that only top brass in the department have the real authority, and that she is in no-way to blame for the inmate?s computer and what he was doing with it.

?I couldn?t tell a deputy what to do, nor did I have authority over inmates,? Rene said. But undersheriff Daniel Pfannes says ?in this specific instance, one individual failed the system.?

This all stems from the federal pornography case against 44-year-old Francis Sharrak of Farmington Hills. While waiting months to sentenced by a federal judge, he spent 18 months in the Wayne County Jail. He was housed in segregation, in a cell similar to the one former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was housed in.

A federal sentencing memorandum confirms that Sharrak used a laptop computer with internet and cell phone access to transfer huge sums of money and to run his pornography business. Undersheriff Pfannes said Tuesday the inmate lied about a court order giving him access to a computer, but that Newell was responsible for the breech of jail rules.

Sharrak has been sentenced to 6 years in federal prison and must pay $4.2 million restitution. Newell is waiting for her whistleblower lawsuit to proceed in court, while jail managers say they?ve taken steps to make sure no breech of computer protocol is allowed in the future.
