S3 and custom roms

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys!

I have been thinking about switching to Galaxy S3 from iPhone 4S. My only concern is that Samsung has not all information about the Exynos processor found in its International version. The repercussion being that pretty much most custom roms are unstable and buggy. Moreover devs like CM might even abandon the project.

What do you guys think? I don't like TouchWiz at all and want to run custom roms on the phone. Another alternative would be to pick Nexus 4 but due to non removable battery, lack of supplies and no micro-sd card slot, i don't want to pick it.

Thanks

Realistically, the Galaxy series has sold far to well for CM to ignore. They'd me ignoring a good 50% (or more) chunk of the Android market.

I have a Galaxy s2 (with an Exynos CPU) with a custom ROM, and I can't say there are any show stopper bugs in it or any other stable ROM's I've tried. Sure you're always going to get conflicting bugs with customisation and default Android processes, but show me one ROM that's perfect in the matter.

If you don't like Touchwiz, you can always get a custom launcher. I prefer Apex Launcher as it has the feel and design of the AOSP Android with many other features.

Yes i agree that there will always be bugs but most roms have quite a few like no hardware video acceleration, nfc not working along with camera crashing which makes it a deal breaker :/

Cm10 at least is very close to getting all functionality on the GS3 working however, where do you live? depending on where you live and which version of the GS3 you get, there will be a better experience. I have the USA Verizon version and all functionality is already accounted for, however, The USA versions of the phone do not have the exynos processors in them. from what I understand though all versions are very close.

CM on s3 will be better than any other roms out there. the main reason why other roms didnt work with older phones is because of the drivers for the hardware.

GB to ICS was a big change and GB drivers didnt work well with CM due to outdated drivers.

thats not the case with S3 since its getting JB and it would work with CM without any problem.

Hey,

StandingInAlley, I've got the international version of the Galaxy S3, specifically the GT-I9300. I've never used CM10 rom's, however if I've tried the SuperNexus done by Faryaaab, (Build 5), which is based on ASOP android, and it's been pretty stable really, with nothing major as a showstopper (used it for a daily driver for around a month). However, if it's touchwiz you're really not a fan of, you could look at the theme done by Vertemus (I can't recall his name correctly), called Domination, which skins the os to look very much similar to the ASOP, while retaining touchwiz functionality (such as S-Beam, and other features requiring the samsung frameworks). You could also replace pretty much all of the system apps with the google equivalent, (except the dialer), as I've done in the past, giving you the best of both worlds really. XDA's really the place to have a look, and see the amount of roms there, you might find one that may interest you.

Hope this helps,

What carrier will you be on?

I'm on Verizon and there are a huge amount of custom ROMs to choose from, and CM is doing very well.

CM10 runs JellyBean, so of course it's a little buggy and it WILL be until the official OTA is released (which is soon...)

The only thing to be aware about the phone is the actual *phone* part of it kindof sucks. Signal for voice/text is awful.
