2 tons of pigeon droppings found in church tower

Recommended Posts

STOCKHOLM - A hatch on a Swedish church tower inadvertently left open for some three decades resulted in 2 tons of pigeon droppings amassing in the tower.

The church's property manager says the layer of droppings was 30 centimetres (12 inches) deep when it was discovered during a May inspection of the Heliga Trefaldighets Kyrka in Gavle, 170 kilometres (105 miles) north of Stockholm.

Lennart Helzenius said on Thursday that church staff had been shocked by the sheer number of bags of excrement cleaners were removing from the tower. He says the droppings filled 80 bags in the first round of cleaning, and then just as many in the second round.

Helzenius says the hatch had probably been left open since the 1980s.

Imagine the extra stress placed on the structure, at the place appears to be well built! Sounds like there will be lots of guano for the gardens in and around the church!

On behalf my clients (pigeons), I must say that it is an elaborated plot to stain their immaculate reputation amongst the bird kind. Therefore, I suggest this offensive thread be removed until The High Court decides on the matter. This situation is filled with poop, if you pardon the pun.

the extra stress was the first thing that came to my mind, While I was reading it I assumed the way they found it was due to cracking or damage not just from a standard inspection.

12 inches really isn't that deep to account for 2 tons of droppings. Maybe I'm not picturing the "tower" right. I'm thinking of a steeple which is fairly narrow so 12 inches over about 5x5?

2 tons converts to about an area of 8x8 feet covered by 12 inches of water. Now, if we only knew how much does a cubic centimeter of pigeon guano weight.

Wait -- I'll scrape some off the stature, and let you know ... brb.
