What the thugs didn't realise was that the crumbling building was owned by kung fu grandmaster Lu Shen who used it for his kung fu school. It was also the place where he lived with his family of kung fu experts including his three sons and his wife – also a black belt.
When the thugs arrived in advance of a construction crew with wrecking equipment the martial arts family telephoned their students and within minutes everybody was kung fu fighting.
One eyewitness said: "The bunch that turned up to clear the property away looked tough – they were all wearing black but they didn't prove to be that tough in the end."
Several managed to run off but the rest ended up unconscious on the floor and several ambulances were needed to ferry the injured to hospital.
China has been plagued by allegations that wealthy construction companies often use heavy-handed methods to evict people from locations where they are planning developments, but in this case the strong arm tactics failed to work.
