mobile.HD Video Player : Now you can play mkv and other popular video format on Surface/RT/Windows 8 computer.

Price is $2.49 with free trial...the developers said more improvements and features will be added soon.

Haven't try yet...but 356 MB for video player is kind of ridiculous...

I use AIMP3 with metro skin to play FLAC (desktop app) though

$2.49 is ok, and I've already donated to VLC Metro port

but VLC Metro is still 3-4 months away to be ready...and ARM version will take longer time

VLC plays all that and more. For free. It may not be a Metro app, but it works on Win8.

The lack of dts audio support prevents this from being usable at the moment. I'm using Pressplay Video on my Surface instead as it includes full support for mkvs.

PressPlay's MKV playback has been pretty buggy for me. Conversion and seek times are slow, the framerate of converted videos is jumpy, the audio is way out of sync, and more often than not the app will simply crash after fast forwarding for a couple seconds.

I'm still relying on the desktop MPC-HC for MKV, FLV, etc.

New app : Yxplayer - can play almost any format of video including avi/mkv/etc...also supports subtitles

However, the interface is a bit ugly and it costs $4.49 and only support x86/x64...not yet ARM compatibilities

What's the difference between Mobile.HD Media Player and PressPlay? I rather go with a free solution if it does what I need.

For non-RT Windows 8 PCs, VLC still works (it's still my MKV format player of choice).
