Apple CEO Tim Cook announces plans to manufacture Mac computers in USA

They're still in the process of acquiring more expertise. Who's to say they won't eventually when they're more independent from others?

I'm just saying start putting money down now, $100 mil is tiny, heck I can't even buy a good sized assembly factory tooled for $100 mil...

Apple is investing more money in construction of their new headquarters then they are investing in assembly in the USA... still money invested in the USA

Apple building their very expensive new HQ in the US doesn't add to the local economy?

Apple has to start somewhere. If this works out for them it paves the way for future investments.

isn't that exactly what I said above? that it is still investing in the USA by building it?

So what's the issue then? One way or another Apple's investing money in the US economy. The way I see it it doesn't really matter how.

there was no issue, you seemed to make an issue out of my comments I wished they would of put more into the investment... I was just saying 100 mil is a small amount by my opinion, but they are still building the new HQ ontop of that

You didn't mention the HQ investment until later and at first purely focussed on Apple investing "only" $100 million. I'm just saying from the start it's still better than the company investing $0. They have to start off somewhere and see if it all pans out. On top of that it wasn't you I was responding to initially, but rather ahhell who turns every bit of Apple news into something negative.

Depends, if it's $100 million in infrastructure, that's a pretty huge investment. You really can't compare it to Intel, who is building a very expensive R&D / manufacturing site.

$100 mil. to have some components made in the US, or to pay some other company to do some assembly work, true, that's not much.

There is a lot of manufacturing jobs and skilled workers already in the US. It is possible that this may increase price, but if Apple is smart and leverages a more educated work force to be and work smart than they may be OK.

I've seen instrumentation assembly lines in Buffalo, NY with lots of folks assembling and soldering tiny things under stereo microscopes.

the way the interview went it sounds like they are basically outsourcing the work in the USA while they get a plant tooled to make "some" components here... which $100 million for that is nothing... it could cost $100 million to tool a plant! it's not a cheap task

So, it's basically $100 mil. + $ for outsourced work + $ to continually support a new plant. I think we should be happy when any company wants to spend money on building something new in the US.

I think the point whether the investment is good or not is that the news can't be shared like "Oh wow look at tim cook assembling in the US to bring back business and help the US", if it were really that he could do way way much more, I think that's the point people are trying to make.

It's definitely the iMac, since we've already started seeing some (even stock retail models) that have "Assembled in USA" on them.

Yeah I found a post on the Apple forums a day or two ago that was posted just over a year ago from a guy with a "Assembled in USA" 27" iMac. He thought it might have been a refurb at first but Apple convinced him that it wasn't. Perhaps they've been running a limited plant for the last year or so while the logistics are being set up.

A bunch of 2012 iMacs were spotted too as being assembled in the US.

If Americans buy apple stuff for say.. 50 billion a year, and apple invests 100 million in America, and everything else is made and assembled in china. then Apple is investing in china not America. in fact they're taking money out of the American economy, not adding to it. The only money they add to the American economy, is to their fat bank account of money they're not using for anything. which could have gone to building American Fabs and production facilities.

Yet Apple's building a very expensive new HQ in the US. Not to mention the hundreds of millions they spend on new data centers there as well. And please, the US has been the #1 advocate of a nearly, if not completely, free capitalist economy. This is a direct consequence of that: Companies will do whatever suits them best. Apparently investing more money in their own country doesn't connect with that goal. Nearly every, if not every, major company is guilty of this.

really? because Apple "makes" (Designs) their own chips now, they could easily move their own chip fabrication here... just as expensive as what Intel is up to

As far as I know most of Apple's AX mobile chips are fabbed by Samsung in Austin, Texas.
