avast Avast high RAM use

I recently installed Avast because windows defender was spiking to 100% CPU a lot of the time which made my laptop hang and it was getting on my nerves.

I always used to use avast so I went back to that.

The high cpu spikes are gone and my system is definitely running smoother without defender.

However, Avast is using almost half a GB of RAM. This seems an awful lot for one AV program?

Is that normal or not?

Its down at 18MB now.

Not quite sure what was happening there, It wasn't scanning or anything.
