State police were responding to reports of a shooting Friday at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., State Police Lt. Paul Vance told NBC News.

Vance had no information as to possible injuries and no information on the apparent shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The Newtown Bee reported that one child, apparently wounded, was carried from the scene by a police officer.

Students –- “some crying, some holding hands,” according to the Hartford Courant -- were escorted from the school by police and teachers. They were taken to a staging area where their parents could pick them up, the Courant reported.

NBC Connecticut reported that the entire school district was in lockdown.

A man who answered the phone at a store across the street from the school told NBC News that he saw three ambulances arrive at the scene and then leave.

Newtown is about 45 miles southwest of Hartford and 80 miles northeast of New York City.

The school has about 600 students.

This report will be updated as information becomes available.[/i]

That's damn scary. That's the next town over from where I grew up and where my niece's and nephew are going to to elementary school now.

I hope they catch the sick f--- who did this. Committing a shooting of any kind, any where is atrocious, but doing it an elementary school is the lowest of the low.

The alternative is not cool, would you prefer a Teacher flipping out, a student flipping out or a parent flipping out, of course the random stranger flipping out is the likely outcome, but still horrible

It's probably a custody case, or someone mad at one of the teachers.

Or, you know, crazy. Every option here sucks.

I can't imagine what it would feel like to have a child killed in school. Especially so close to the holidays. I would be an emotional wreck if I lost my son or his sisters. I know Christmas isn't about the presents, but as a parent you look forward to the excitement that your child will have to opening gifts, and knowing you made them happy in that moment. Having that moment taken away from you, along with your child would be awful.
