BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Authorities in Alabama say a man opened fire in a hospital, wounding an officer and two employees before he was fatally shot by police.

Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams says the officer and employees suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

The gunman reportedly opened fire as the victims were coming off the elevator. A second police officer came around the corner and shot and killed the gunman, MyFoxAL.com reports.

Williams says police were called because a man with a gun was walking through St. Vincent's Hospital on Saturday morning. The hospital issued a "Code Silver" using the intercom which alerts the staff that there is harm or threat with a weapon.

Police are hoping surveillance video taken on the floor will help them determine what happened. A hospital spokeswoman told MyFoxAL.com that employees go through security training to deal with incidents like this.

Detectives are still working to determine why the armed man was in the hospital.

On the plus side, if I was going to get shot, by a random guy on a killing spree, a hospital isn't a bad place for it to happen.

Thank goodness. I can't take much more. :D

On a more serious note, this might be why we are seeing so much craziness. This end of the world talk added to the pressure of the holiday season. Just a recipe for disaster.

Really... another one? At least he didn't kill anyone, though that's not to diminish the severity of being shot. Hopefully they'll be out before Christmas.

But it's not the whole world - these shootings are confined to the US.

I was referring to recent shootings, which have indeed been confined to the US.

That's a very selective list - for starters it omits the majority of mass shootings in the US for 2012. More importantly, after the high profile shootings in the UK and Germany both countries passed new legislation to restrict gun ownership.

I was going to say the same thing. Whenever something like this happens and just sparks a bunch of copycat like "aftershocks", it happens everytime. Things will calm down in a week or so, until some crazy person does it again in 6-12 months. This is why the news doesn't usually report on suicides that happen in public because it just gives people the idea to do something similar.
