I'm not too sure I follow. People think they are getting screwed over on their unlimited data plans? Maybe it's different depending on the country, but my "unlimited" (I pushed it to test it, 10GB a month) plan is more than enough for the money that I pay. That said, I have heard that there are more people with these issues in the U.S. so maybe this is specific to America?

I think the point being made is that tethering plans are a complete ripoff? Someone could use 10 gigs of Netflix data through a mobile app and have no issues. Tether and obtain a couple hundred megs through browsing and they cut you off.

Again, is this country specific? If that were happening with my ISP I would be on the phone straight away to argue it out with them.

From what I'm gathering it's pretty much universal with all mobile carriers, they sell "unlimited" data then can anyone that uses it for tethering. This specifically is with regards to mobile data not fixed line broadband :p I think they bury the stuff about not tethering in the T+C's somewhere

AT&T here in the states (My phone connected to Vodafone when I was in Germany once, not sure if it's called that everywhere in Europe) doesn't even have "unlimited" any more. I just set myself up with the 3 GB plan for a while, then downgraded it to 300 megs because 99% of my data usage is done over my home wifi, so it doesn't actually count against me anyway. If you don't have at least the 5 GB data plan you can't tether at all, they disable the feature in the phone. I had the 3 GB plan for a while and had to use an app (Easytether) to tether it once and a while when I was out in the middle of nowhere and needed to check something. They are kind enough to not cut you off though if you hit your limit. You'll get a push notification when you get close, and when you break your limit, they add 1 GB and $10 to your next month's bill, but it only affects that month, they don't permanently upgrade you.

This is exactly why I want to root again. I don't need to tether much but I should be able if I want without paying extra as I already pay for data. It's not like it costs them any more.

You see here if something is advertised as unlimited it usually means 4G/3G speeds till you hit 5gb and then you're limited to 2G for the rest (but some carriers like AT&T and Verizon have gotten rid of their unlimited and now its only 3gb or 5gb, with massive overage fees).

So say you're with AT&T and you buy a 3gb plan, you can't tether it until you pay them extra. You can avoid it by rooting your phone and using a custom ROM, but if your phone doesn't support that (like say the lumia 900, or 920 due to the encryption) you're outta luck.
