GOTY 2012
Resident Evil 6

Top mentions
Borderlands 2
Xenoblade

I really enjoyed resident evil 6, as a modern resident evil fan since resident evil 4 and 5, i find this last version to be an improved over previous modern resident evil game, move and shoot, improved cooperative, more content and better item management are some gameplay factors that make me enjoy this game over previous version story wise its large and seems more epic than 4 and 5.

I didn't even look at it, nor the first game. It just didn't seem to be my style.

It actually wasn't mine either. But all my PC gaming friends were playing it and every time I looked at Steam and saw them all in-game I felt left out. So I bought it and I was blown away. I really don't care for shooters all that much, and the "RPG" aspect is nothing amazing. But the co-op, and story/dialogue in the game is what really sold me. I dislike the basic gameplay, but love the fun it provides; so much that it negates the things I didn't like about it.

Honestly, this year has had some good titles, but I really can't think of anything that deserves GOTY.
I suppose my vote will go to Borderlands 2 simply because of the amount of fun I had with friends and the hilarious dialogue. Though, if I didn't have friends to play it with, I wouldn't have even bothered, nor do I think it would be that good by myself.

It's sad day for gaming when we've reached the point where people judge a game based on "story" and not gameplay.

Actually you can ask members who have been here about the fact I have stated several times I could care less about the story in video games, usually because they suck ass. I usually almost always care about gameplay. And again, this is why Walking Dead was so impressive to me. As already stated by someone else, we can have both.

It depends on the game...

Indeed. I personally have room in my world for games that are heavily story-driven (where somewhat shallow gameplay becomes forgivable) as well as games that are heavily skill-driven (where the storyline is non-existent but it really doesn't matter anyways).

Anyways, I'm working on my list right now -- I'll post back a little later. I have enjoyed seeing your guys' choices though. Like Larry said, I'm surprised to see him choose The Walking Dead, since I know how critical he has been of video game stories in the past. Even more tempted to play that (those?) game(s) now.

None they were all garbage, Mass Effect, Far Cry, Assassins Creed, they all fell short in my estimation.

I enjoyed some games this year such as Kingdoms of Amalur and Sleeping Dogs but they are hardly GOTY quality.

Probably Skyrim...

Again... :-P

Skyrim was 2011.

I'd start with Mass Effect 3, because whether or not the ending was all that (I didn't really care anymore, it was too full of finding random crap in enemy occupied systems) the multiplayer stands out from the crowd. It's a bit of a money pit if you choose to spend on it, but it's still great.

Then I'd go with The Secret World, proving once again that the surest way to lose money is to make something unique. Hopefully they'll be able to make money with their new pricing plan.

Sleeping Dogs was great, aside from the weird vehicle handling. The DLC packs seem to be a bit overboard, but whatever works.

Max Payne 3 makes the list because it's nice to have a main character that human beings can actually identify with somewhat.

I'm going with the Walking Dead as well for my GOTY. I think I posted as such right after finishing Ep 5.

I'm holding off on my runner up until I play Dishonored, which I bought during Black Friday but have yet to open up.

Skyrim was 2011.

Hence, "Again".

For me it is Crusader Kings 2. Granted, its pretty much a niche-genre game and won't get the mass support but this is really a fantastic game, Paradox did a great job. Add the expansions and some of the community mods (AGoT!), I have literally sunk days and nights into this damn game.

Runner up for me would be XCom. Finally a turn-based game I could get into...but you have to play Ironman to really get the most of it. I enjoyed Spec Ops, really an underrated game in my opinion.

Walking Dead is a great game, i was really blown away by it, although it's hard to pick a winner this year as there has been some great games.

Unfinished Swan and Tokyo Jungle were good games as I Am Alive, i also loved Forza Horizon's as it was a great idea to expand the racer onto the streets.

For me it would have to be Max Payne 3, a series i already loved, coupled with great graphics and excellent gameplay and story, it was a real blast.

thanks for starting this Larry, bought so many games this year yet played so little of them hahaha. So it has to be something I actually finished...either Mass Effect 3 or Max Payne 3. Or Black Ops 2, for being so surprising and loaded with content. The Line was a huge surprise, as well, loved it so much for coming out of nowhere like that.

Bottom line: Mass Effect 3, it's just the most intricate of all of these so it wins by default, plus the MP was a surprisingly amazing addition, and the DLC so far has been good, not brilliant but memorable.

and there's so many negative people here...2012 sucked ass for me personally to the point where I basically don't really want to live anymore, but to say it was a bad year for gaming? give me a ****ing break, it was an incredible year for gaming, the best since 2007 for sure, maybe even better!

lol I thought ME3 was the biggest disappointment of 2012. It was terrible (IMO)

I am *positive* I posted here? Hmmm, maybe I was at work and closed the tab before posting - that's actually quite likely.

I don't have a flatout GOTY, but I have a list of highlights if that's any good. They are as follows:

Dishonored - For just being a little bit 'different' and enthrawling.

Natural Selection 2 - Because it was, and is fantastic... and gave me a nostalgia hard-on circa AvP '99.

Quantum Conundrum - I really enjoyed this one, it was like having Braid turned First-Person - loved all the different variables you needed to manipulate.

Borderlands 2 - Some nice little touches to spruce the gameplay up from the original, but the story? And the characters? And dialog? ****ing tremendous. Handsome Jack is easily villain of the year. Shame the DLC sucks.

Hotline Miami - Best £5 I've ever spent. Cracking game, loved the music and it had an addictability similar to a hardcore platformer - so much about muscle-memory and reflexes.

Far Cry 3 - Crammed a fair few hours into this bad-boy. I haven't bothered with the multiplayer yet, but the singleplayer is fantastic. They've looked at FC2, saw what didn't work, and either fixed it or scrapped it.

The Walking Dead - I did not think i would enjoy this game at all - I haven't played a P+C since like Broken Sword 2 on the PSX, and even then I wasn't exactly enamoured with it. However, this game possessed a decent story and some interesting mini-games.

I have to disagree with everybody listing ME3 as a GOTY. I thought that was the biggest crock of **** I've played in a long time; graphically it was beautiful, but the gameplay was pure Copy + Paste garbage - which is a shame as I really enjoyed ME1 (due to it being identical to KOTOR/KOTOR 2/Jade Empire) and thought ME2 had a great balance of Combat vs RPG-lite vs Story.

Honourable Mentions:

Max Payne 3 - Actually smashed my expectations to pieces. I was quite skeptical about this release, but it served up the exact gameplay I was looking for from another MP title.

Planetside 2 - An incredibly ambitious and interesting game - very much one that needs an organised group of people for maximum enjoyment, but a good game nontheless.

Football Manager 2013 - The only reason this does not make the above list is because I have not played it. I can already see from screenshots and various videos that this game will devour my life and **** out a Job Seekers Allowance booklet.
