Best sounding guess: testing the waters to gauge interest in a AC3 possibility. Whatever the case, this really shocked everyone. I remember some seriously late nights playing AC2. Machines now should be able to run the game with no sweat at all. There are still some niggles with AA on certain AMD/ATI cards reported on the forums over there, so if you are running a AMD/ATI card and have crashes, that's why.
