[King Mustard]

I have a Core i5-750 and want to upgrade my processor (I'll need a new motherboard, but that's fine).

I only think it's worth upgrading if the performance is doubled.

I wish to spend as little money as possible.

Can someone help me find some of the lowest cost CPUs that doubles the performance compared to my Core i5-750?

I will keep looking myself also, and edit this post if I find anything.

EDIT: Found this. My CPU scores 4,373. Looks like I'm looking for something like:

They're all more expensive than I hoped, so I shall not be upgrading at this time.

Why do you need double the performance? I've always felt modern CPU's have a hell of a lot of overhead for normal every day use!

I'm still on a Core 2 Duo and the biggest performance upgrade I experienced was from more memory and an SSD.

So just curious where you feel your current i5 is coming up short?

Some very modern PC games, video encoding, even FarmVille.

I don't think you'll see ANY performance increase in PC games unless you get a better GPU as its almost totally dependant on that. There was an article a read which involved a budget gaming build vs a top end one and the only determining factor was pretty much the graphics card. Ill try dig it out for you later. As for video encoding, you talking on the fly stuff? My Core 2 duo e6600 can transcode 1080p on the fly with no issues. If it's film making stuff, is it worth the upgrade from what is consider a fairly modern system just to shave a few mins off the encoding time?

As I said in the conclusion edit in my first post, no, it's not worth it Too expensive.

Haha. Okay got it. Just modern PC's seem to have so much power relative to the basic functions most of them perform these days. Even smart phones are getting that way! It's quite fascinating.

I've often looked in my bank account and thought about splashing out on an upgrade... but I can never find the justification!

No offense but i think it should've been really obvious that you weren't going to be able to get the massive performance upgrade that you wanted over that cpu on the cheap.

The CPU is a few years old now. I thought (and was hoping) CPUs with double the performance would be around £100-£125 these days.

Been wanting to upgrade my i5-750 as well but the CPU offerings today haven't exactly been great. SandyBridge was only a 20% improvement afaik, and IvyBridge is about the same or slightly better than SB (but at the cost of higher temps?).

I'll be waiting to see what the next generation is instead.

Hmmmm Farmvilled eh, I'm not any kind of computer wiz, but I've recently come across something myself that might aid your performance in this regard, but I can't be sure if your "issues" with the game are entirely due to your setup and not the game's limitations, coding, et cetera.

I don't play it or browser-based games, but I have made a tweak to my browser for a performance boost in general.

It's called a RAMDISK

What browser do you use?

It essentially utilizes your RAM (not Hard Disk) for, I hope this is correct, a cache for data in whatever browser you choose to employ it, which I guess more or less gives you the incredible access speed boost of RAM (memory) as opposed to spinning discs of your standard model-T hard drive.

Now, if you're rolling with an SSD then I can't say what the benefits will be when compared. But I believe using RAM is the fastest if you have RAM to spare.

Also, if the specific browser is set to utilize your video graphcis to speed up things may also help.. I don't REALLY know much about it all though, just ideas

RAMDISK really? So far no one has answered the OPs original question. If I had time I would but I am on my way out the door. Hopefully the next person who comes along will have some relevant input.
