A patent cited in 20 claims in Apple’s US case against Samsung has been invalidated, giving Samsung a better chance at seeking a retrial or a reduction in its $1.05 billion penalty.



The United States Trademark Office (USPTO) has invalidated 20 claims related to the "pinch to zoom" patent cited in Samsung in the US.
The patent in question was No. 7,844,915. Legal jargon aside, it's basically responsible for the "pinch to zoom" gesture found on smartphones and tablets.
Samsung was ordered to pay Samsung has a better chance at seeking a retrial, or at the least, having its $1.05 billion penalty reduced.
During Samsung's post-trial hearings this week, Judge Lucy Koh is expected to issue both parties rulings on motions, including an important judgement on damages.

Hope the fine is reduced to $1.05 .. a dollar and 5 cents. Or Samsung could just buy Tim Cook a coffee at Starbucks.
