I'd like to add some new rap artists to my music library

Recommended Posts

All "off-the-radar" artist suggestions are welcome and please don't offer any mainstream artists, those are not for me.

Examples of what I do like: AOTP, Cube, DMX, Vinnie Paz, older Swollen Members, Madchild solo, tech n9ne etc.

since I see you enjoy tech n9ne (im a big fan of his) you might want to check out Krizz Kaliko as well, he is on techs label. also you might want to check out Young Noble, he is from the group Outlawz, which was Tupacs group that he put together before he passed away. I use to work on Outlawz website and still keep in touch with them over the phone. they do make some quality music.

Not sure if you'd like Aussie hip hop, but here are 2 of my favourite bands. Heaps more to choose from.

Might not be your cup of tea though.

Thanks for the suggestion but yea it seems that's not really for me.

No worries, been a fan of rap and hip hop for years myself. Keep looking, there is a whole world of it out there. :D

7L & Esoteric*, Blaq Poet, Cormega, Jedi Mind Tricks*, old Mobb Deep.....

(Members of AOTP but their "solo" albums are better than AOTP material)

Also, people are too disrespectful towards mainstream hip-hop; If you truly love hip-hop, you listen to every style; from cheap ass pop-rap to Necro graphic ****.

I'm not really disrespectful towards it, it just isn't for me, I'm not saying others shouldn't listen to it. I truly love hip-hop but just a certain kind of hip-hop.

Also thanks, I've got a whole lot of Jedi stuff also their "solo" stuff but will check out again :)

OK, I didn't mean the comment necessarily towards you :)

I listen to everything I can pretty much get my ears on (I sadly now have less time). There are some mainstream things I like. I like more independent things on a personal level though.

The problem is that if something goes mainstream, irrelevant if its good or bad (OR REAL BAD) people are quick to criticize it or simply refuse to listen to it because they "too cool" or "too underground" for it. That's some fake bull****.

Having said that, if you only listen to commercial mainstream ****, its the same fake bull**** as above.

The below is personal opinion:

Big L

This guy released ONE album (if you want, one and a half). I personally don't think he can be considered one of the all time greats.

Cru, the group, also released ONE album and it was awesome like Big L's. The group split up and basically nothing "wow" has came out....

SLick Rick

A bit of the same except to a less extent; He released several albums (some better than others) but really non consistent . Ive always thought he thought the ideas but had a ghostwriter.

Again those were all opinions :)

Listened to Dead Prez and Black Star but they're still missing something..I don't even know what but something. I'll sure listen to some songs later on tho.

Thanks guys :) Keep em coming.

I'm guessing what I'm really after is something like DMX in his prime but that's a bit hard to follow imho.

Never said they were all time greats. Lifestyles ov da poor an dangerous, while having pretty decent lyrics severly lacked production quality. The Big Picture was released posthumously and had better production.

Slick rick is hit and miss for me somewhat, some songs I really like, others I can't see the fuss.

Some other recommendations:

Kool G Rap, if you like mafioso gangsta rap, you might like him.

Dr. Octagon, one of Kool Keith's alter egos. It's alternative hip-hop.

MF Doom, he has some good stuff, especially some of his **** with MF Grimm, like Madvilliany.

ef@mm, Tonedeff, packfm, and 2 other dudes. Happy **** you songs is a pretty good album

Mos Def, black on both sides is one of my fav albums.

Let me know if you want more.

Atmosphere

Also, if you like DMX, one of my favorite albums of all-time was a one-off from a guy called Nine.

Tech N9ne. I know hes been around quite a long time but I just started listening to him and all I gotta say is WOW

He used Tech9 as someone he already liked.

Last one that got me really hooked. Lupe Fiasco had a few duds here and there but the last album is really solid.

IMO, his only real solid album was his first. Don't get me wrong his other songs are generally good, but his first album was perfectly put together.

I completely agree with you

Celph Titled (Wordplay/Metaphor artist)

Member of AOTP. I have no idea what this guy eats for breakfast to write what he writes

The problem is that this guy seems to be all his life "underground" and I personally don't agree with that. Imagine you are a employee; Do you want to stay an employee with your salary because its "cool" and you don't want to be the CEO that everyone critiques for every little **** up he does?

With Celph I actually had a argument and lost a bit of respect for him....Ill try to search for the post if I can....
