We've heard many times before that too much red meat is bad for us, but this study of more than 100,000 people still got the nation's attention. For the first time, researchers estimated the effect of red meat on a person's lifespan—and the news wasn't good.

On average, each additional serving of saturated fat-filled red meat was associated with a 13% higher risk of dying during the 28-year study.

Processed meat products such as hot dogs, bacon, and salami were especially hazardous. The antidote? Eating more fish, poultry, whole grains, and low-fat dairy may lower your risk of dying prematurely, the study found.

I'd rather eat bacon and die at 70, then live without it and die at 80, a wrinkled and dribbling wreck.

I gave up red meat several years ago, and my body thanked me for it, with better chemical/hormonal balance, smaller waistline, no belly fat, and general well-being. I felt 'better' within a few weeks tbh, though it took a while for the other effects to kick in.

I just did it since it was known to increase estrogen in men (based on how and where it is raised and pumped with chemicals) and increase heart disease and stomach paunch in general.

Best thing I did in my life, other than give up soda (aside from an occasional whiskey and coke). I will fight for some fried bacon now and then though... mmm mmm and some eggs.

Like a friend of mine always says, I'd rather die happy than healthy.

I'm pretty sure puffer fish will shorten your life span a lot more than the occasional red meat ;)

NEW JUST IN: Exercise frequently, eat a varied and balanced diet and you'll live longer.

It pretty much goes without saying that too much of one thing will typically be bad for you. These studies do nothing but point out one element of bleeding obvious.

Last week they said peanut butter was bad for you and was gonna kill you and this week they peanut butter is good for you and promotes longer life. I guess someone has a fleet of Prius to pay for.
