External Hard drives arent OS specific, right?

Recommended Posts

They can be used on macs or apples correct? Only preinstalled software on the external hard drives could be only for mac or windows, or am I thinking wrong?

Nope. Although if you have an ex-FAT or NTFS drive your options on some older operating systems are limited however. Usually though most externals are FAT32 which is pretty much universally read

Thanks Javik. I ordered an external for my macbook pro without realizing the hd said it was windows required. Im thinking thats got to be for the backup software that comes on the hd, which I dont plan on using anyways, so I should be ok?

Yes, the backup software is only limited to Windows but I would imagine the drive itself will still be fine. Do you have a link to the specific drive you ordered, it should be pretty easy to give you a certain answer from that?

If you format that to FAT64 (ExFAT) It will work on OS X & Windows. I have an external drive formatted in that and it works on my Windows PC and my friends iMac.
