Nexus 4, Ok..I'm starting to fall in love with it

Yeah I lay it screen down cause the screen in my opinion is usually the strongest part unless its the SGS3. Not only that but the bumper as you can tell doesnt raise the back up more but it raises the screen up more. I always put my phone down on soft surfaces too. If im at a friends house and its on a table, its on top of my wallet screen down so in case something lands on it, i would rather not have the screen get cracked.

In my pocket the screen faces my leg. I've had enough friends bump something REALLY hard and crack their screen in there pocket.

Yeah, my screen is always facing my leg, but I think I'm going to start doing what you do and put the phone screen face down. Makes sense. I guess I'm always hesitant because I'm worried about the screen coming in contact with grime on whatever surface.

Lol, I put my phone on my wallet too lots of times.

Im just as paranoid as you are. I use to run powersupport screen protectors on my 3GS and my 4S. Well since they dont make those for the nexus, ive been running naked and I have to say, besides wiping down the screen at the end of the day, I dont mind it. I also make sure if I set it down, soft surface only. cause no matter how quickly you wipe down a surface, their can we any kind of grime, dust, sand, etc that you dont see.

So as long as you have your wallet, or some kind of a book or something, you should be fine. At home I have a microfiber that I set my iPhone 5 on and Nexus 4 on. Thats the only time my phone sites face up lol.

With lightflow, I like the fact that if after my preferred time limit on the notification light is done, i can have the camera LED flash too. I only use this at friends houses because at home and work, my phone sits face up on a microfiber.

When you pay this much for a device, taking "some" precautions is kind of important. I only say this because a lot of people say its "only a phone, tablet, laptop, etc".

Yeah well I cant just drop another $350 on my nexus 4 ESPECIALLY when they are hard to come by still.

Im glad google replaced it, how did the call go and what did the rep say regarding the situation?

I love my Nexus 4 16GB, revision 10 model! :)

I've had it since Nov. 19th.. I use the XO Skins Full Body Skin, installed it on Nov 21st.. The phone has been naked, aside from the protector until I got an S-Line TPU case on Dec. 7th.. And just recently, on Dec. 29th, I am using the Poetic Borderline Bumper Case on my Nexus 4.. I am also on the Xylon ROM and using Franco's r23 Kernel.. My battery life gets me between 3-5 hours depending on how intensive my usage is..

After almost 1.5 months of use, I have no damage whatsoever (knocks on wood). :)

Well, Google Play Store hit the hold on my CC this morning. That *should* be an indication that my replacement will ship today. Last time I did the RMA, however, they put a hold on my CC and I got nothing after a week. I called them on Saturday they removed the CC hold, saying that they should only have put it there when the replacement ships and then Tuesday morning put a new hold on my CC (but that time it had actually shipped).

How do you find out what revision yours is?

The Google Play store! Just received my Nexus 7 tablet from them the other day - every single local retail store was sold out for christmas, but the Google Play store despatched mine within 2 days of my order with express shipping :)

did exactly the same for a Nexus 7 for my mum just before xmas, ordered it on the Saturday evening and it was at the door Monday 9am! Now that's impressive.

How do you find out what revision yours is?

If you go into the bootloader, there's a section that says "HW VERSION - rev XX"

There is also a topic on another forum where you can find out the production date and the place identification on your serial number that's found on the box

I hope the next Nexus device comes to Verizon, and I really hope it's not LG again. Can Google and the manufacturer get a Nexus device with a proper launch? I feel like the Galaxy Nexus's launch kinda failed (at least with Verizon), and Nexus 4 has failed due to supply/demand issues.

I flashed MiNCO ROM. Has stock Android browser built in instead of Chrome.

Sadly, the crack developed while the phone was in the official Google bumper so it wasn't a surface-contact thing (and that shouldn't sit well with other owners). The phone gets quite hot in the very center while in normal use and I suspect that the glass cracking was a thermal thing but I can't pinpoint when it actually happened.

I still believe it's impact or pressure related, instead of thermal. Because with the blizzard and freezing cold weather here at Wisconsin, I got no cracks taking the phone outside and do some photosphere, then take it back indoors.

BTW I'm using Diztronic TPU case, which covers the back if that helps.

Needs to be a change in temperature or a temperature gradient..not just being cold. I just seriously doubt it is due to impact because of how careful i've been. And if it is due to impact then it is some seriously weak glass. I can tell it is pretty damn thin as well (looking at the crack, and comparing that to my wife's old EVO 4G that has a crack through it). You can tell the thickness isn't the same as what they typically place on the front of smartphones.

I appreciate your input but three points I would like to make:

* Judging by the number of posts around the Internet on the various Nexus 4 problems, they are having some consistency issues. It is very likely that I maybe received glass that wasn't well formed, or perhaps was put under extra strain during the assembly process. There are at least 2 different assembly lines operating in China and Korea.

* I'm sorry but I'm really tired of other people telling me about their phone not having a crack, so therefore I must have done something to mine. The assumption that all things coming off of an assembly line are exactly the same is very naive. In another forum I've been told things like "I've dropped my Nexus 4 X number of times and it still looks flawless. I'm not calling you a liar, but you must have been a lot rougher on your phone than I have for that to happen." Well, I'm happy for you if that is the case. I wish I would have gotten your rock solid Nexus 4 device but Google gave me this one. Thankfully, Google acknowledges that this is a known issue and are replacing it.

* If there was any significant impact I would expect more of a web-like glass shatter. There are not signs of impact anywhere. So if it was an impact that caused it, then this is some seriously weak glass.

I stand by my original theory that it was a thermal thing. I was using my phone while taking a poo. When I'm using it, the area right above the Nexus lettering gets really warm (not so hot that I can't touch, but noticeably warmer than any other phone I've previously had...this thing is a beast hardware wise so that isn't surprising). I sat the phone against a tile floor that was no doubt a lot cooler than the Nexus 4 was. When I picked it up, that is when I noticed the crack. It could have happened before then and might have been due to some impact that I just didn't notice...idk... I find it very strange that I owned an iPhone 4 for 2.5 years and never had a problem with any cracks anywhere while the Nexus 4 developed a crack under the same care and usage pattern in less than a week.

Thats why. Youre not setting the back glass directly on a change of temperature environment. It only happens when the actual phone feels the change.

For example http://www.droid-lif...h-a-glass-back/

Yeah. Just because the air is cold, does not mean that the Nexus 4 will rapidly cool. Air doesn't transfer heat very quickly.

@Richteralan - If you want to donate your Nexus 4 to science (and really drive home your point that it wasn't thermal), I have a little experiment for you. Use your Nexus 4 to the point of the back being warm-to-hot and then go outside and push it up against a nice cold metal pole (on a fence or something). See what happens.

Well, the fact is, most people reporting cracked back ACTUALLY DID something. Whether they remember it or not is another story.

I use Stability Test app and baked my phone to 45C and guess what, the back never crack. Also as I said I take the phone outdoors and back indoors, the back never crack. I also used it without any protection for a week before my pouch arrived from UK.

Regarding your IP4, did you use it with a bumper? TPU case? Naked?

The truth is, the glass back is quite solid.

I'm not defending N4 like some fanboys. Just stating from my personal experience.

Does that constitute normal usage? I'd love to do it but didn't you mention that it happened under normal usage? Who will do what you've described?

If you disregard normal usage, I can crack both front and back within 1 second, using a gasoline soaked string. But what point does it prove?

If you went about and did what I described and the glass did not break then that would for sure prove your point. If it did end up breaking then that would not necessarily prove mine. You were pointing out that you live in very cold weather, and I was merely arguing that it isn't just cold weather it is a matter of heat transfer.

I respect the fact that you are just sharing your personal experience. I dislike it when people extrapolate their personal experience to represent the data on all known hardware that is out there. I apologize if any of my posts have come across as "all Nexus 4's have weak glass" or that "all Nexus 4's have design defects". Like you, I can only state from my personal experience.

I'm really happy that Google is replacing my Nexus 4. As I told them over the phone (and sincerely meant), if it had happened after a few months I would have just chalked it up to bad luck and not bothered them. Given that I had only had it for a week, sure I'm going to call them up and see what they can do for me if anything.

I really hope that the replacement is as good as your device is.

I had my ip4 naked mostly, but had a bumper on for maybe a month or so after I purchased it.

And, as I previously stated, I'm still happy with the phone crack and all! I'm worried that the crack will fester, widen, and become a cut hazard... but I really don't care other than it is a new device and I like keeping my stuff looking new for as long as possible.

You can ask my wife about my ocd. I'm just trying to speculate as to why something happened and I appreciate additional input.

But believe this: I won't be placing my device on my tile floor anymore. My wallet might become a coaster...

I tried to smooth things over with you and I get a 'whatever dude'. You are just a jackass. Thank god there is an ignore feature on this board so I don't have to read your dribble. What did you parents do to you to make you so crass?

Right. How convenient. Not only you insult me, but you insult my parents, too, just because I don't agree with you?

Thank god I'm glad you can ignore me on the internet. Bet you want to do that in real life but cannot, eh?

I am EAGERLY awaiting this phone to come out on Sprint! I am pretty ****ed off that there hasnt even been anything announced yet. I am due up for an upgrade very soon (my Nexus S 4G is fine but I've grown tired of it) and I have no idea what to get. Actually thinking about going with the Galaxy Nexus (dont want an iPhone, no SGS3, ...etc..) I really hope they announce this phone for Sprint (in its modified form, ofc) sometime soon.

Published a review on my blog: http://fpbecker.blog...s-4-review.html </shameless plug>

Good read.

I agree it's not a perfect phone. But judging from the price point, it IS perfect.

Can't believe I spent almost twice for Sony Xperia S.

edit: I also think most Americans has distorted smartphone price thanks to the carrier subsidy. And I absolutely not inflicting 2 year contract BS on myself.
