IDC - PS3 has passed XBox 360 worldwide, WiiU to hit 50m by 2016

It?s been a long time coming, but it looks like the PlayStation 3 has finally overtaken the Xbox 360 in global shipments. A new report by the International Data Corporation ? spotted by GamesIndustry.biz ? estimates that PS3 figures reached 77 million units this past December, a tally greater than the Xbox 360?s still impressive 76 million units. That?s despite Sony?s system launching a year later than Microsoft?s machine.

If accurate, the PS3 will almost certainly go on to become the second best selling console of the generation, behind the Nintendo Wii.

Sony revealed that it had sold 70.2 million units globally as of 30th September, but the budget priced 12GB system has proved particularly popular all over Europe this Christmas. Furthermore, the platform enjoyed a strong Black Friday period in North America.

While the proposed victory doesn?t mean much in the general scheme of things, it puts the PlayStation brand in a good position heading into the next generation. Sony?s dominance in European and Asian territories has really pushed it forward in recent years ? it now needs to focus on winning back the North American and UK markets, too.

New report from IDC also states that Wii U should exceed 50 million sold by 2016

With the rise of digital, mobile, cloud gaming and smart TVs, there's been plenty of talk about the "death of consoles" of late, but if you ask International Data Corporation (IDC), it's all hogwash. The research firm today published a new forecast on the video game console market, Worldwide Video Game and Entertainment Console Hardware and Packaged Software 2012-2016 Forecast, which essentially states that consoles have plenty of life in them.

"The console ecosystem is in a state of flux since these platforms need to support an ever-growing array of non-gaming features and services at the same time that game distribution and monetization is moving in a digital direction," said Lewis Ward, research manager of IDC's Gaming service. "At the same time, it doesn't appear that alternative platforms - set-top boxes from cable companies, Web-connected smart TVs, and so on - are positioned to materially disrupt the trajectory of the 'big 3' console OEMs in 2013 or 2014. Discs will remain the console game revenue mainstay for years to come."

"2011 and 2012 were tough for many console game disc developers and publishers," added Ward. "With the advent of eighth-generation consoles, starting with the Wii U, historical norms strongly imply that game disc revenue will stop bleeding in 2013 and rise substantively in 2014."

That said, IDC doesn't deny that the digital revolution is having an effect. The firm predicts that the volume of packaged game discs shipped will decline an average of roughly 3 percent per year through 2016, as console spending shifts into digital channels.

The report also highlights that just this past December, Sony's PS3 managed to surpass the number of Xbox 360s shipped worldwide (about 77 million vs. 76 million), despite the PS3 launching a year later. While many hardcore gamers are now waiting for the next-generation systens from Sony and Microsoft, IDC noted that Nintendo will still "find an audience" with Wii U, reaching global bundle shipments of 50 million by year-end 2016.

IDC's 67-page report is being sold for $4,500.

It's the same for both consoles. They aren't caculating only PS3's shipped and only 360's sold. They are using the same thing to calculate them both. Really people, are you this dense?

Japan, Xbox 1.5M, Sony 9M, Wii 12M

Results are skewed because of the Japanese market. What the hell can Microsoft do about this?

The PS3 isn't doing the same thing it is trying to do elsewhere. Yes its the same hardware, but the software selection is completely different.

PS3 is winning in PAL territories as well.

PS3 is trumping 360 in Europe and Asia - the 360 is only outselling the PS3 for the last 2 years in the US. Microsoft needs to learn the console business is a worldwide thing, dominating one continent simply isn't enough if they're losing or being thoroughly destroyed in the rest.

I always find it exceedingly amusing when 360 fanboys say Xbox don't sell well in Japan because they support their own brand when in reality the same thing happens. Then in neutral territory, PS3 generally trumps the 360, probably slightly in the grand scheme of things. The American market is bigger at the end, it is only so much the Japanese can skew.

And often, game selection pays a part. Sony does seemingly have a closer relationship with Japanese developers (big shock here), hence why games on the PS3 may appeal more. And provide a bigger variation in that regard. Just as MS knows how to play it with the Americans a bit better.

This is a ridiculous statement. Considering it took six years for a household name to barely eek by a newcomer I don't think Microsoft is having any issues at all.

To be completely honest, this news surprised me, only because I thought Sony had been ahead for a long time now due to worldwide sales. Seems to me like Sony has more to learn here.

To say MS was a newcomer though is forgetting how much clout they had as a good operating system and programmer of software. They not only had one of the biggest and richest companies, but they had a good rapport with a lot of gaming companies due to DirectX.

If any company needs to learn something, it's Nintendo. They are just holding onto the past it seems.

And despite all that clout, everyone thought the original Xbox was going to be DOA. They've just been doing things right, and for some reason people think because Sony's ahead by a small amount that they've done something wrong all of a sudden.

The original Xbox wasn't that great though. It had a small library compared to the other systems, and was mostly used, at least by a majority, to mod. The games for the original Xbox, had more duds than great, and only a select handful of games on it really were good.

Hell, the console itself was only out for about 4-6 years before MS totally dropped support for it in all regions. That is not what a successful console does :p

I haven't seen anyone say that MS has done something wrong. I see a lot of people though trying to discredit the japanese market in sales.

the Asian market has nothing to do with MS's marketing. Its the fact that over there people will buy a turd in a box if it had sony on it.

And sony isn't trumping anything. Theres 3 markets and Sony dominates 2 of the 3 yet the increase is so small. Figure that out.

That's probably because the Japanese market almost exclusively buys Japanese. Counting that as even an area of competition is somewhat pointless. Comparing totals from EU and US is much more representative of the actual picture than including Japan.

Not embarrassing at all considering this is not factual. Don't take my word for it.

IDC information is very incorrect. I wouldn't use any information from the IDC as fact.

Okay yeah, some kid on Neogaf who has way to much time on their hands is the factual source.

And I am well aware a lot of stories originate from Neogaf, etc., that does not make some kid who is breaking down the numbers a factual source.

Is this kid perhaps right? Yeah sure, but I sure the hell am not going to rely on him, or anyone else, as the factual source.

For you to say otherwise just shows how unreliable anything you say actually is.

Actually, America tends to buy more things that are made in America too. See how that works. Stop trying to pass off things just because you don't agree with it.

If that were true IKEA wouldn't be doing so well here. Japanese consumers have an active distaste for things not Japanese. Americans don't care, in fact most of what we consume isn't even made here anymore. Your comparison isn't an accurate one.

I just posted to that thread to make a point. If Sony did outsell xbox it would be a miracle. Xbox sold more than double of the PS3 in december in America alone.

Sony is behind the Xbox before December and in December 2012 Xbox 360 sold 1 million 400 thousand compared to 625 thousand PS3.

Go do the math and follow through and you will see that the IDC's PREDICTIONS does not add up.

Math is universal, predictions are not math.

You can not be serious. Did you just seriously link to a forum post; in an attempt to discredit a report? Not only do you not have anything near substantial to discredit; but you pass it off as a fact.
