Cat Lost on Vacation Travels 190 Miles Home

WEST PALM BEACH, FL ?The last time Jacob and Bonnie Richter saw their 4-year-old tortoiseshell cat Holly, she bolted out of their motor home at the Daytona International Speedway on Nov. 4, apparently frightened by fireworks.

For days, the distraught couple searched for Holly, putting up flyers and alerting rescue agencies before despondently heading home to West Palm Beach.

There was a brief glimmer of hope two weeks later when a rescue group spotted the distinctive cat outside of a Daytona Beach restaurant which fed feral cats.

But before the Richters could drive there, Holly had disappeared.

Then she showed up, skin and bones, paws rubbed raw and too exhausted to meow, in Barb Mazzola's Palm Beach Gardens yard.

"She was pitiful. She just stood there, ready to collapse," said Mazzola, who rushed to the store for cat food and began feeding the cat she named Cosette.

In a week, Holly was well enough to walk inside. Mazzola coaxed her into a cat carrier and took her to the vet, where she was scanned for a microchip.

The chip came back to match the Richters, who got a call from the pet tracing agency Saturday.

The couple couldn't believe it. Holly had traveled about 190 miles in 62 days.

Since Holly was an inside cat, they had no idea how she found her way, ending up less than a mile from home.

"It was quite a journey for this little girl," said Jacob Richter, holding his cat to his chest and breaking into tears. "We just can't believe she came home." :happy:

Actually I am a cat person. I don't mind dogs if they don't jump on me too much but I still prefer a cat.

A much as I love cats, you still got to be stupid to take them with you when you are travelling from place to place, it goes against their primal instincts. Cats like to escape outside (so you can't keep them in the car/trailor), and they are also territorial.

Their territory is a fixed location where they know that they can find food. They aren't smart enough to remember where to go back to, when every day is a new place. All this cat knew is where it's primary fixed location was and worked his way towards there where he knew there will be food.

Obviously this one is a lousy hunter and only just managed to stay alive, otherwise he would have found a new territory along the way.

It is utterly pointless taking the cat with you, the cat is not going to miss a few pats for a couple of weeks, as long as there is someone to feed it, the cat is happy. Cats do not enjoy outings into unfamiliar territories like dogs do.

Why is it that pet cats usually only stray only a few houses away from the central point of it's main food source? Cats are free to go anywhere they want when they are outside, but generally do not take themselves out on day trips to the other side of town before deciding to come back home, they might cross roads and fences and so on, but still not too far away from home. Over to the next block at most.
