[Q] Frozen - Defrosted Meat

Recommended Posts

Just talking to the missus about defrosted meat, she thinks it has to be eaten the day it is defrosted and if not, bin it

I think depending on how long was left before the sell by date when it was frozen, still applies once it is defrosted

Example: Frozen on the 1st with a sell by date of the 5th would give it 4 days safe eating time once it was defrosted, so if defrosted on the 10th, I would still have until the 14th to eat it ?

Anyone know ?

generally i would not leave it for more than 24 hours after defrosting regardless of how quickly it was frozen. as the Ice crystals have already done damage to the meat and it will decay at a much faster rate.

If it still smells OK, then why not use it.

Although a couple of months ago I had a dodgy belly from a defrosted cottage pie. :x

Yea, I'm wary of meat as it is, I`ll eat bread past its best if it looks ok and smells ok, but meat and milk I`ll not touch past the sell by date

You're supposed to cook it after a defrost :p

Back on topic :) littleneutrino is correct, after freezing meat will deteriorate very rapidly, so 24hrs is the maximum I would personally leave it.

So that's where I went wrong. :D

I bought it from the cheap shelf, on the day of it's best before, and froze it that day. Took it out of the freezer one Friday morning, cooked it (it was piping hot) and woke up in the early hours with the worst belly ache I have ever had. Laid in bed for however long until I new I was gonna throw - threw up, and was OK after that apart from my chest aching from the heaving.

Bacteria starts to grow once it starts to thaw. But, as long as you don't wait too long and cook it properly, it should be OK. Biggest importance is cooking it properly.

For steaks, I normally marinate them 24 hours before cooking. Leaving them in the fridge in all the acids and spices in a glass bowl and covered. If you leave it in plastic or metal, the acids can pollute the meat due to eating away at the container.
