5 hurt in accidental shootings at 3 U.S. gun shows

Accidental gunfire at three gun shows around the United States on Saturday left five injured, authorities said.

Three people were injured in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the Dixie Gun and Knife Show at the state fairgrounds, a quarterly event that usually draws thousands of people. State agriculture department spokesman Brian Long said a 12-gauge shotgun discharged as its owner unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check at a security entrance.

Two bystanders were hit by shotgun pellets and taken to a hospital. A retired deputy sheriff suffered a slight hand injury.

Long said the shotgun's owner, 36-year-old Gary Lynn Wilson, brought the weapon to the show to find a private buyer. Sheriff Donnie Harrison said it was too early to know whether Wilson might be charged.

In Indiana, police said a 54-year-old Indianapolis man was injured when he accidentally shot himself while leaving a gun show.

State Police said Emory L. Cozee was loading his .45 caliber semi-automatic when he shot himself in the hand as he was leaving the Indy 1500 Gun and Knife show at the state fairgrounds. Loaded personal weapons are not allowed inside the show.

Cozee was hospitalized for treatment. Police say the shooting was accidental and no charges will be filed.

Meanwhile, authorities in Ohio said a gun dealer in Medina was checking out a semi-automatic handgun he had bought when he accidentally pulled the trigger, injuring his friend. The gun's magazine had been removed from the firearm but one round remained in the chamber, police said.

Police Chief Pat Berarducci said it appears the bullet struck the floor and the man was wounded in the arm and leg. Berarducci said the man was taken by helicopter to a Cleveland hospital. His condition was not immediately known.

This doesn't help the pro gun crowd at all.

These are your law abiding citizens that are supposed to know how to handle a gun.

Seems like more educations about handling guns safely is necessary when you allow people to buy a gun

It doesn't matter to the pro-gun crowd how many people are injured or killed - all that matters is that they're ready to bear arms against an oppressive government. Obviously.

You need to pass a test to get your driving license but not for an ar15

And they are only too happy to throw money at that oppressive government as long as its spent on the military no contradiction at all

Obviously these guns were illegally obtained and or not being used legally according to laws! They were criminals, it doesn't count!

Let's get a little perspective here people. Accidents happen all the time. How many thousands upon thousands of people got into accidents in their cars during the time the show took place? How many people cut themselves with knives during the same amount of time and had to go to the hospital? How many thousands of people got hurt just doing their job at their place of work?

Why do we not make a big deal about those accidents when they happen far more often and hurt far more people than guns? Yeah crusading against guns might be a worthy cause for some but at the end of the day they are far down from the top of the list of things that are likely to hurt you in your day to day lives.

This is why before owning a gun you should have to get a license, that includes a full course on Basic Gun Safety.. And maybe a little common sense. Walking around with a loaded Shotgun, and not knowing that there's a round in the chamber.. this is fairly basic stuff..

Idiots. People hurt themselves with chainsaws, too, but no-one is crying about Home Depot selling them.

Right, because people run around killing mass quantities of people with chainsaws....and they're specifically designed for killing. Oh wait....

Uhoh, be careful, McCordRm. nekkidtruth, is using the "oh wait" reply tactic.

Chainsaws are specifically designed to kill trees. I've used one myself, very effective at slaughtering those pesky trees!

Comparing trees to humans/sentient beings. Sounds logical! I'm sure you can come up with better than that. Perhaps if you weren't trying so hard to compare things that have pretty much zero to do with each other, you might have actually come up with a feasible argument.

But I wasn't comparing trees to humans, way to take my remarks completely out of context and use your own to try and put me in my place, maybe you could try something more original...oh wait..........

Perhaps you should speak to whoever it was that made your post prior to this one. They did in fact insinuate that chainsaws were designed for killing trees, comparing them by proxy to guns which are specifically designed for killing living beings. It's become a bit ridiculous that you can't even follow your own conversation. Have we really reached a point where you don't really have anything to add that substantiates the points you try to make, that you feel the need to lie and says you didn't say what you said?

You mean like this idiot? (Whom people like you have a hard-on for):

http://motorcitytime...ights%e2%80%9d/

I'm not entirely sure what your point is. I've never, at any point in time, given an opinion on how I feel about the environment or any of the issues trees face.

I clearly did not lie and I did not compare trees to humans, why is it so difficult for you to understand? You want to make up things and attack people for their remarks. You're deluded in believing your own BS. So typical of an armchair activist.

If you say so. As they say however, the proof is in the pudding. You very clearly stated that chainsaws were specifically designed for killing trees, immediately after I mocked someone else for attempting the same thing. Even the most basic deductive reasoning would lead one to believe you too were comparing said items. Perhaps another attempt at an English class might help alleviate these types of misunderstandings.

I did say chainsaws were designed for killing trees and how effective they are at slaughtering "those pesky trees". You refuse to admit that it is you who is taking my remarks out of context and adding your own. And I wholeheartedly agree, an English class would help you immensely, particularly regarding mockery and sarcasm. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink!

My averages of 95% in English through each year I was in school would beg to differ.

And you'll what? Prove that you're clearly not mentally stable enough to own a gun?

And you can prove that, how? And it is relevant, how? The world is not about the grades, it is about how you use the skills. I think you did not did your supposed 95% in English credit when you misinterpreted what was supposed to be light humour with no intention of personal attack or agenda except to poke fun at the home depot statement. I guess I could give you the benefit of the doubt, as we all know if you study literature enough there is always something hidden between the lines, but you seem to taken the "oh wait" quip far too personally.

When i read Raze's statement, I chuckled. Chainsaws are very effective at cutting those pesky trees, more so than people and probably more so than anything else. Now it begs the question, what is guns most effective at these.... probably killing organic meatbags of some sort.

As for this, this is a non-issue personally. Accidents happen all the time, just as stupidity. People who were there all are probably pro-gun anyway and it shot what probably is a crowd of pro-gunners. Is not a good look, but at the same time it merely points to need of basic safety knowledge of how to handle a gun as opposed question its place in society. Bringing a loaded shotgun? Really? Maybe it was a pity it didn't unloaded into himself so he stop spreading his genes, unless he felt so unsafe he have his loaded shotgun at the ready. But won't a pistol be faster than unzipping the thing? Who knows, not when it spontaneously discharges.
