singularity87 Posted January 22, 2013 Share Posted January 22, 2013 Hi, I have a high-end 2011-era PC that I bought with great enthusiasm, but regrettably I just don't take advantage of - I don't game as much as I planned to when I got it, and for various reasons haven't used it for anything like what it's capable of. The PC's details are in my sig under Desktop, it's from Scan Computers - they use off-the-shelf parts but build it for you. The best way of describing it is ltherefore like a really good quality home-built machine as opposed to one from an OEM. It would be just the base unit not the peripherals I am speculating about what I might be able to sell it for and wondered whether anybody here had any thoughts. Also I can't find anywhere that's geared up for safely selling such a device (I don't have any experience of selling online with smaller stuff unfortunately). That's a very simplistic way to look at it since not all components lose value at the same rate. RAM value dropped like a stone for example (I bought 2GB in 2010, 4GB in 2011m 8GB in 2012 with the same amount of money, all new) I'd advise finding a local forum/website and see what's the going price of each component. If you can't find yours in particular, look for similar ones. You also need to take into account if there's any warranty left and retail prices for current gen parts. If you sell the whole thing at once you need to drop the price by 10-15% from the cumulative value of all the components as an incentive. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

singularity87 Posted January 25, 2013 Author Share Posted January 25, 2013 I think it's probably going to work out as being worth more to me to have around than its cash value, now I've done the research - selling it won't get me anywhere near to a MacBook which is what I want. Better to wait til I can get the MacBook anyway and still have a really good PC around. Amusingly at this exact moment somebody just asked me to mind their MacBook on the train (don't worry - I'm honest). Thanks for the advice. But then I completely miss the trick with desktop computers as I have only changed the graphics card once on my old system, this current one has had no hardware changes, so I am not really the kind of person who upgrades parts whenever, I like a whole new system every 4/5 years or so. Depends if you want the cash or if you would find use for it. Selling the parts would be more work but may end up getting you more cash. You can bundle some items together if they are hard to sell. Things like the BR drive will be worth keeping as they won't be going anywhere for a while. Also might want to look into converters to see if those SSD's could be used as backup drives through USB... Realised I have had my desktop for 6 years now (minus a couple of upgrades including 2xSSD, Quadro GPU and 27" monitor) - would love to rebuild but can't justify it as the current one works so well!
