Toshiba Laptop UEFI Fix

Recommended Posts

Tonight I tried to do an offline boot into a CD to take an image of my HDD and send it to my NAS server. Upon choosing to boot from the CD, and rebooting the Laptop said it wasn't a valid EFI image on the CD and booted back into Windows.

I booted back into the BIOS and disabled Secure boot and changed from UEFI to I think it was CMD or something like that for the Legacy Bios mode. This allowed the CD to boot and do it's thing (except I had a failed video driver for the GUI). So, I decided to boot into Windows to see if I could find a new version of the software. (Redo Backup and Recovery). This is where things went downhill FAST!!!!

I couldn't reboot the system past Lan Boot which I thought was odd, and Toshiba by the way didn't give their key to load the BIOS. I then tried to boot into the restore disc I made when I got the Laptop and it booted only to say that there was no UEFI bios installed and the system shut down.

I couldn't boot into anything at this point, straight black screen of death. Yet, I could boot into the recovery media which did no good.

Bottom line - after talking to Toshiba and refusing to pay for their advanced tech support, was finally routed to them and learned the trick to getting back to normal:

  1. Power off Machine
  2. Remove Battery
  3. Remove any external devices and charger if plugged in.
  4. Replace Battery
  5. Press F2 (Magic key) to get back into the UEFI setup screen and switch back to the UEFI bios.
  6. Save your settings and reboot!

So, if you ever run into anything like this with a newer Toshiba (might be others) laptop that has the UEFI with Win8 pre-installed, this is probably going to save you 20 minutes or more of phone time. :)
