For some people, a 250-square-foot room may seem like a barely tolerable jail cell. For ultra-hip Manhattan residents, it’s the size of what may become the hottest, cutest new apartments on the market.

On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that the “My Micro NY” design was the winner of the adAPT NYC program, a six-month competition to find the most innovative design for tiny apartments that would be feasible living spaces under a proposed zoning change that would allow for a smaller minimum apartment size. The winner was chosen from a field of 33 submissions, the Mayor said.

The project was created as an attempt to find more housing space for the more than 1.6 million residents who live on the highly desirable 23-square-miles of real estate in the island of Manhattan.

According to the Mayor’s office, 22 of these micro-units will be set aside for low- to middle-income residents with lower-than-market rental rates — perhaps as low as $940 per month — which will be made available to applicants via a lottery system. The rest will be available at regular market prices.

I wouldn't want to live there, the lighting is so bad that most of the people don't even cast a shadow, and one of them has phantom light shining on her from the wrong direction of the source
I couldn't live in a place that ignores physics like that.

Oh and it's stupid small for 1k a month, I'll let the hipters have them.

I don't know what's so desirable about Manhattan.

You can get lower mortgage payments on a house in PA, a lot lower than $940 a month.

That is cheap. I pay 1300 for a 975sq foot townhouse with a tiny yard

Multi-purpose rooms are big in asia and a great way to not have a huge area. I think its great.

I know for New York that's probably cheap but it still seems very expensive to me.

I wish I had that. I have half the space at 4 times the cost.

I guess thats why I don't understand the whole reason why young people want to live in the city. Housing is through the roof, food and entertainment is super expensive, and you aren't saving much (if anything).

Seems a hell of a lot better to live in the suburbs and either commute or find a job outside the city and visit every once in awhile

^ I guess the draw is the possible high incomes, or a quest for stardom.
