The new, 128GB iPad will be available starting Tuesday, Feb. 5 in black or white for $799 for the Wi-Fi model or $929 for the Wi-Fi plus cellular version. It will be sold via Apple Stores, Apple.com, and authorized re-sellers. "With more than 120 million iPads sold, it's clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs," Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said in a statement. "With twice the storage capacity and an unparalleled selection of over 300,000 native iPad apps, enterprises, educators and artists have even more reasons to use iPad for all their business and personal needs." The 128GB iPad will hit stores just four days before Microsoft's Surface Pro is released on Feb. 9. The 64GB version of Redmond's tablet will be $899, while the 128GB version will be $999. In announcing the 128GB iPad, Apple talked up the impact of its tablet on the enterprise market - a space that has largely been dominated by Microsoft. "Virtually all of the Fortune 500 and over 85 percent of the Global 500 [companies are] currently deploying or testing iPad," Apple said today. "Companies regularly utilizing large amounts of data such as 3D CAD files, X-rays, film edits, music tracks, project blueprints, training videos and service manuals all benefit from having a greater choice of storage options for iPad." Apple quoted execs from Autodesk, WaveMachine Labs, and Global Apptitude, all of whom sang the iPad's praises. Beyond the storage boost, there are no other significant changes to this model. It still boosts a 9.7-inch Retina display, Apple A6X chip, and FaceTime HD camera. It will come equipped with iOS 6.1, which just made its debut yesterday. They keep making a new iPad every 6 months now, increase the price but bring nothing new to the table. People are going to eventually get fed up with that. I agree they need to open the ipad up some let it run true OSX and give it USB . A card reader would be nice. Have you ever took a picture on your camera and wanted to view it/ back it up/post on social media website/ edit it? Photoshop Touch is actually pretty cool. I think that's the path they will eventually take. There is only so much you can do with iOS and I think iOS has reached its maximum level. We haven't seen anything new on it in quite a while so it leads me to believe they are out of ideas. The logical thing for them to do is, like you said, make the iPad be able to use OSX instead of iOS and that will then make it a worthy tablet to get, but in all honestly, paying $799.00 for a tablet with nothing new but more space it's not something many people would want to do right now, considering the competition. They haven't but they are overpriced with a weird twist, storage price goes down as move up the line. I still have my original Asus transformer. Works great and never wanted to upgrade past that since it does what I need it to do. Apple and others were getting their price points around the same with comparable products...now Apple is charging more for theirs...again. Seriously, they need to swap things up since the Surface Pro 128 is around the same price but you can do much much more with it. Touch transformable tablet/laptop running Windows 8 for around $1000, or the new iPad with more storage and little else for $1000. Hmm hard decision. You're comparing products used for different things. A tablet with cellular is obviously going to cost more than a tablet without. Using your comparison, I would pick the iPad all day since you'd have internet access everywhere whereas the Pro does not. I dont know about the current model, but on my first generation iPad I sometimes notice the fact that it's RAM constrained to the point that apps are force-quit or Safari has trouble keeping even a single web page in its cache. It would definitely be advantageous for it to have more memory. Admittedly this was less of a deal on prior versions of iOS and, if I remember correctly, this model originally didn't even have support for multitasking, so memory requirements were naturally lower. So since the iPad doesnt have USB, then using your guidelines, I still cannot compare them. Competing products will not always have the same features and will not always be able to do the same thing. Companies produce something that the competition does not have to entice users to buy their products. IF all products must have the same features in order to be compared, then you cannot really compare any products out there since they are all a little different...different hardware/software. But yeah, iOS has had a lot of junk added over the years which is mostly optimized for the newer processors and memory, whereas the older models are mostly an afterthought. I haven't seen anything regarding that, so I'm asking that as a genuine question. The Pro will be running full Win8 and will have USB access. So I dont see why I couldnt go to Verizon and get a USB adapter to have internet wherever I go. Granted, its a little different...but the outcome is the same.
