An Unauthorized Biography, the extraction is now done at a New Jersey chemical processing facility by a company called Stepan. In 2003, Stepan imported 175,000 kilograms of coca for Coca-Cola. That's enough to make more than $200 million worth of cocaine. They refer to the coca leaf extract simply as "Merchandise No. 5."

The facility is guarded.

I bet. I'm surprised the drugs lords don't try to raid it occasionally.

coke is good... made me fat... gave me withdrawal symptons when i stopped drinking 3 liters a day... never got mentally addicted to it though ... only physically so it was easy to cut the habit just 3 days of headaches and mood swings

You were addicted to the caffeine in the soda. When I've drank coffee heavily for several days I've gotten mild headaches from withdrawal, usually water and Motrin got me past it. Sometimes I had to take a small amount of caffeine.

Opiates come from poppy, not coca plants.

I like Shasta. But Coca-Cola is ok. Pepsi is nasty. Might as well eat a cup of sugar and wash it down with rust colored carbonated water.

A friend of mine works for the Stepan corporation here in the burbs of Chicago as a chemical engineer. She is out at the plant in NJ twice a month. You cannot imagine the amount of security there.

I love Sprite. I'm addicted to Sprite. Not a day goes by where I don't drink at least 2-3 (smaller) bottles of Sprite.

Actually, I'm drinking one now :s

Really interesting story. Quite crazy it was less than 100 years ago.

I used to drink Coke regularly but I hated the way it made my teeth feel and I knew how bad it was for me, so now I avoid all sugary soft-drinks. Occasionally I'll have tonic water or bitter lemon—or some cloudy lemonade on a hot summer's day—but otherwise I actively avoid the stuff.

As for tea and coffee, I know I drink more than is healthy. A while back I got addicted to the caffeine in tea and had withdrawal symptoms (I was drinking 10 cups or more a day) and then on coffee (as it was free where I used to work) but now I tend to have one cup of coffee a day (made in an Italian style espresso maker and often with frothy milk) and just a couple of cups of tea.

Personally I think that caffeine should be regulated more thoroughly, as it's clear it's addictive and I think it's dangerous to be deliberately adding it to products. I don't think caffeine is much more safe than the cocaine it replaced.
