So the owner of our company has an iPhone, and was recently impressed by a person who apparently arrived and used his iPhone to send an image, wirelessly, to an external screen (small screen, but larger than iPhone, described as between 7 and 10 inches), for the purposes of sharing a PowerPoint presentation without having to bring a laptop or have everybody stare at his tiny iPhone screen. Anyway, I'm not having much luck at all figuring out what the guy could have been using since I wasn't there. I have very little experience with Apple products, and have found a few YouTube videos demonstrating the iPhone 4 being used with the iPad VGA cable adapter to connect it to a screen, but that isn't what he saw, and he was very specific about it being wireless. I know there are wireless display systems out there, but I'm not sure which ones would work with an iPhone. I don't even have an iPod, so I can't go testing out the different hardware myself.

What you're describing sort of sounds like the iOS version of Keynote (Apple's PowerPoint alternative: $10) running on an iPad (your 7-10" screen) being driven by Keynote Remote (A free App made by Apple) running on an iPhone. The whole system is designed to work together and is reasonably seamless and reliable.

The iPhone probably wasn't sending the information to the screen, just controlling what sliders were up and displaying notes.

I Suppose an iPhone running Keynote could also be using AirPlay to stream the content to any screen connected to an Apple TV, but the 7-10" screen you mention sounds like an iPad the saleman (or whatever) brought with them.
