January has witnessed thick smog dominated 1.3 million square kilometres of China (see the attached pic). Less than a week will come Chinese New Year Eve - at that time, traditionally a nationwide firework display will be staged. Now the question is: will Chinese people ignore the warning of NATURE and continue to worsen the murky skies of their country with the highly air-polluting spectacle?

The approaching New Year will be an important test stone for the sense of reason in Chinese people. For my part, I hope the poeple will find an alternative way to celebrate the festival. I also hope that you people around the world will keep an eye on China to remind them to reform the old-fashioned tradition. A China with clean air is what we expect. We're living in a global village, after all.

I hope they do continue it, and it's so horrible because of the pollution that it plants seeds of change, maybe not in the current generation in power, but the next
The firework tradition itself isn't the problem, that's nothing compared to their other pollution sources, the fireworks displays are relatively harmless.

It is interesting, my understanding that the primary concern is the chemicals used to produce colo'u'r which can survive the combustion process and end up within the water ways?

I hope they do it. They have more problems than a few fireworks shot is going to solve.

This is a wild view but,

To the drug dealer who sells cocaine to those who want the drug is it not the same to the Chinese who sells manufacturing to those who want cheap goods?

While their is enough of a population to look past the horrors for their own benefit - a market will exist. Exploitation will continue while people are not willing to give up the very industry that drives it.
