Asahi: PlayStation 4 to be over 40,000 yen

Recommended Posts

The PlayStation 4 will launch this year for over 40,000 yen (about $428), according to a report in major Japanese daily the Asahi Shimbun. That's the first clear indication we've gotten on pricing for the new system, and suggests that while Sony isn't pricing the PS4 too aggressively, it's learned its lesson from the shaky PlayStation 3 launch. For comparison, upon release in 2006 the PS3 cost around 60,000 yen in its more expensive configuration, and $599 in the US. Meanwhile, the cheapest PS3 now costs 24,980 yen in Japan versus $269 in the US. Were the PS4 to launch at 40,000 yen in Japan, we'd expect an American price of around $400 or more.

The Asahi Shimbun further corroborates things we've heard from other reports, such as a 2013 launch for the US and Japan ? no mention was made of Europe, suggesting the release there may well slip into 2014. Elsewhere, the report says that the PS4 controller will feature a touch pad and be "roughly the same shape" as the current Dual Shock 3. Finally, the Asahi Shimbun states in no uncertain terms that February 20th is the date when we'll hear all this information confirmed for real.

At the moment, 40K yen is $426.90 USD. I don't know if Sony is willing to sell the PS4 for $399 USD but I hope they do it. It's much better than the PS3's launch price and considering today's economy, I doubt people would be keen on spending over $450 on a console.

The Wii U launched with two versions: a $299 model and a $349 model. If the PS4 launches at $399, then Nintendo will be forced to lower their prices.

Im good with the $400 pricetag. Anyone who thought it was going to be lower was dreaming. I just hope both MS and Sony only release 1 version at launch. No bare bones edition, no super deluxe version, etc. 1 version at launch, make it nice and simple for once. I still remember some guy flipping out at walmart because I bought the last "deluxe" 360 and he was stuck with the core.

Thats what, ?270, with 20% VAT you are talking ?325 ish. You are looking at ?349.99 or something like that which isn't too bad, I paid ?425 for PS3 at launch, if they price it nearer ?400 I'll wait for price drops.

I heard that it also comes with "touch screen".

And yea $400 is ok.

Just provide us decent games and you will have gamers support , Sony.

  • :| Uncharted Series
  • God Of War series
  • Killzone Series
  • Demon's Souls
  • Ratchet & Clank series
  • Little Big Planet series
  • Infamous series
  • Heavy Rain
  • Metal Gear Solid 4
  • Resistance series (perhaps a bit of a stretch, but I personally enjoyed them)
  • The Last of Us (assuming it is going to be a PS3 title)
  • Motorstorm series
  • Gran Turismo

then on PSN

  • Flower
  • Journey
  • Pixel Junk series
  • The Unfinished Swan
  • Wipeout HD

I cannot personally fathom how anyone can say the PS3 did not have fantastic exclusives this generation. I honestly cannot say one consoles exclusives were better then the other either. I enjoyed them equally. I can say though it seems the PS3's just a tad more varied, and they definitely had the more experimental exclusives. So extra kudos for this fact.

$400 is fine by me, considering the launch price of the original PS3.

I know it is not until the end of the year, but I am definitely started to get very excited about gaming this year. Between new consoles, the Steam Box, even Project Shield by Nvidia, going to be a grand year for gaming I believe.

I would have thought it would be much more than that.

they used more standard hardware this time which is why it's able to be cheaper

the fact that Sony used some custom hardware (such as the cpu) and that blu-ray was still brand new then was the reason the PS3 was so expensive at launch

this is also the reason that the PS4 will most likely not be backwards compatible again

Pricing seems OK. 418 AUD. Provided it doesn't magically jump up to $550 AUD or something.

It will, expect AUD$799 or higher. We will never get a console that powerful that cheap. You can't just convert the US price either; need to account for import taxes, GST and all the other taxes our government love to put on things. I wouldn't even be surprised if the higher spec'd model nudges a grand here. The PS3 (despite being overly expensive) still sold well here, so Sony know despite our moaning we are over priced we'll still cough up the money. That is my 2 cents, so take with a grain of salt...

You're probably right.

Even if you take into account GST and taxes I don't know how it gets to $700-$800. No wonder the retail sector in this country is ****ed.

If they're bringing in Playstation with a price tag of US$399 then it'll put a lot of pressure on Microsoft to deliver a low price point from day one rather than it taking at least a year for the console price to get from astronomical to acceptable.

I've got to buy all my games yet again? That just sucks.

yeah in order for Sony to keep the PS4 backwards compatible with PS3 games they'd have to either find a way to emulate the PS3 (and i don't see that working too well) or include the PS3 cpu in the system as well, and that would jack the price up by at least $100 most likely

We knew both PS4 and new Xbox would be $400-$500, no surprises there. my friggin new Win 8 phone cost me $500, and believe you me it does a whole lot less than either of these beast consoles will do!

only 10 days to find out about the ps4. It is plausible that sony coded a proper emulator so that it can play ps3 games, we shall see. Maybe games will be downloadable via their store which have been slightly changed to work on the ps4 and users can get them for free if they type the barcode off their ps3 game dvd case, who knows.

I don't get why people are so outraged at not having backwards compatibility, other than the revisions of gameboy NIntendo home consoles have never had backwards compatibility up until the Wii, even the 3DS dropped the GBA port. Same for Sega for all their consoles. 360 only had limited backwards compatibility which they eventually dropped, same for PS3.

If you want to play old games, keep the old console.

There is pretty much zero chance of PS4 having conventional backwards compatibility, The CPU and GPU are very different and it's highly unlikely the x86-64 CPU would have the power to emulate the monster SPEs in the CELL, unless they accomplish it with Gakai technology.

The PS2 had backwards compatibility for PS1 games. It was a selling point. Early versions of the PS3 had a PS2 chip for full BC. First revision had a modified chip that gave about 80% BC.

And the popularity of "HD Classics" coming out should also give you a hint that people like playing older games with good gameplay long after the console they were made for has broken or been sold off.

God of War Collection

God of War: Origins Collection (PSP games)

Ratchet & Clank

Silent Hill

Tomb Raider

Splinter Cell

Jak & Daxter

Metal Gear Solid

Devil May Cry

Hitman

Ico Collection

Sly Cooper Collection

Prince of Persia

Okami HD

Zone of the Enders Collection

Yakuza 1 & 2

Prince of Persia Collection

.......and more in the pipeline, like Final Fantasy X.

What's your problem then, why play the old upscaled version of your game when you can buy a cut price HD remaster?

If you want to play the old games then keep your old console, if you have to sell your console to part finance the new console then that's your own fault.

Old consoles break. Although my PS1 still works, both of my PS2's are down.

Just out of curiosity, why shouldn't people expect the new consoles to be at least somewhat backwards compatible with last gen's games? I'm not asking to be an ass, I'm actually curious. I'm not really a console gamer and this is one of the biggest reasons for me. Why shell out $350+ for a console, build a game library (I'll use 50 games as a magic number) at $65 (between $60 and $70 to be fair) a pop/per game which equates to $3250, only to have to shell out another $350 when the next generation console comes out? Then build a library (another $3250, assuming prices haven't been jacked up due to something ridiculous like "pirating" Lol) again.

I will admit that the 360 and PS3 have had a fantastic and long life, where a lot of the cost can certainly be justified, but with the way other technologies such as tablets and cell phones are going, it's obvious people are looking for NEW NEW NEW a lot sooner than the current scheduling.

If the response is "There's no real reason other than it's a huge cashgrab and we're idiots for letting it happen, but we do!", I can appreciate that. It just all seems a little off to me.
