6.64% is not a 'vast majority' for either argument.

It clearly states something, ProWin8 startless menu fans are not as many as they though they were, and so far, they are not a mayority, thus, right now more than half of the public was not correctly taken in account by MS, much less given a choice.

I would like it back too. All the 3rd party start menus out there are just not good enough. They all lag and are just buggy. I actually stopped using all of them and just got objectdock and Im loving it.

But I wouldnt mind having the start menu back..

I wonder how this "argument" played out on Redmond Way, lol! I bet it was like what I'm doing right now after reading such fine posts: Ready? Here ya go!

I guess differences go out the window on this subject....someone has to agree to disagree, else, this is going to be me next time:

JUST USE WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY/PRODUCTIVE...all this bickering is nonsense! C'mon ladies and gentlemen! Be nicer! What works for you may not work for someone else...there has to be a balance!

It's been proven time and time again that opinions on tech sites mean absolutely nothing. When iOS released most people on here called it a joke and a failure and that it would never ever become popular. They were wrong. When XP released people hated it and said it would fail and it went on to be the most popular Windows OS yet.

People on here said that Windows 8 would fail, and so far it seems like they're wrong too since the adoption rate is almost the same as 7 (in a few instances it has been faster) even though PC sales are down compared to when 7 released. Now I know some of you will claim it's because Win8 was so cheap so let me clear that up for you:

1. Upgrades to 7 for PCs purchased 3 months prior to the release date was free (just like the one from XP to Vista).

2. You could get 7 for free through House Party, there was no limit, you didn't have to do anything but fill in a form and it was completely free.

3. 7 shipped with a family pack that gave you 3 retail licenses for $150, which comes out to be $50 for each retail license (not upgrade, retail).

Those are just two examples, but there are tons of others in which people on this very site said products would fail and instead they've become quite popular.

Musi gives us 1 result music gives us 2

Not sure how I could have made that any more obvious.

Probably a bug and not an intended action?

If that's intended then its stupid.

I voted no. I've been using Windows 8 for a week (on a non-touch) desktop, and I don't miss the Start menu one bit. Everything that I used the Start menu for before is easily accessable via the Start screen, and I feel that I am more productive with the Start screen. All of my commonly-used apps are pinned right to the Start screen, so all I have to do is click the lower left corner of the screen and click the tile for whatever app I want to open and I don't have to dig through a bunch of other folders or programs that I don't use. If I have to find something else, I'll just start typing and it'll preform a search. I'm happy with Windows 8.

I quite like the new start screen. As has been said multiple times before it makes my workflow faster as my Win 7 start menu is usually a complete mess with folders and programs all over the place.

On the other hand Metro apps are another story. They have zero use to me and 90% of others on non touch devices. Plus I really don't like the way the new Metro app thing is going. Keep the traditional desktop apps and the start screen = win (on touch screen devices however they work well)

That being said you can just not use them (which is it what I do) and ignore them entirely. But for some reason the start screen constantly reminds me of their useless presence.

You continue to say that, but continue to post no credible sources.

I've been volunteering in a local PC charity for about 5 months and not a single customer that owns a Windows 8 machine or a single volunteer (including a guy I know that's worked inside the Home office and the BBC) have a single positive word for Windows 8. In fact it's really the real diehard Microsoft fans that do have anything good to say about it. I've been using Windows for more than a decade and it's the first release that's made me want to physically hurl my tower out the window in frustration (and yes I have used both ME and Vista). The upgrade cost me ?14.99 and I still feel like I completely wasted my money.

So even though everything works the same apart from the start screen, you still want to hurl your tower out the window?

Get the ****ing start menu apps and quit exaggerating. That fixes your problem with 8, whereas the problems with ME and Vista required more than a little app to fix.

Actually I've never had USB devices start randomly malfunctioning (and staying non functional even after a reboot or unplug then plug back in) in ME, Vista, or Windows 7. Oh and dropping the condescending arrogance might be a good start as well ;)

I have a printer, 2 external drives and wireless keyboard / mouse dongle connected to my computer at all times on Windows 8 and I don't have that problem at all?

Sounds like a driver issue to me.

I could say the same thing about you in this thread and any threads about guns, just look at your avatar and signature (that said I'm on the same side as you when it comes to gun control).

It's not a driver issue, I know how to install device drivers. In fact my USB chipset, motherboard chipset, graphics card, and sound card come in unified driver packages so I even install the same drivers on 8 as I did on 7. Works flawlessly on 7, doesn't on 8. If 7 can do it and 8 cant I think you need a new excuse ;)

You know how to fix a badly made driver too?

Windows 7 has had USB issues in the past too, it's not some unheard thing before Windows 8...

What? You can install XP drivers on Vista/7 too, doesn't mean they're going to work 100%.

So now you have a driver that works in XP but gives one or two issues with Windows 7. Clearly it's Windows 7 fault.

I am curious though, what motherboard do you have where all those come in one unified package?

All I know is, I use the exact same driver packages as explained above. They work flawlessly in Windows 7 and don't in 8. I also use the exact same software as I did on Windows 7. Given that the OS was the only variable I don't really buy the driver as being the cause. In fact Windows 7 worked flawlessly for me on every setup I've had it on.

Windows 7, 8 and Vista worked flawlessly for me on every setup I've had it on too.

But there are millions of people who've had issues with all 3 of those OSes.

The motherboard I have is listed in my signature. The Intel chipset drivers come in a unified pack, as do the Renesas USB drivers that I use, I also have a Realtek ALC885 sound card, and an ATI 6950 all of which use unified driver packages.

Oh oops I thought you meant that you got all those drivers in just one .exe file and I was like wtf I've never heard of that ever happening.

And as for USB drivers, we both use the same Renesas USB 3 and mine work (and have worked) flawlessly. So something else is causing that problem. Google says update your BIOS (not sure why?) and use the Windows drivers that come with 8 instead of the renesas ones.

Ah sorry could have made that a bit clearer really

No worries ;)

I did edit my post. But both my laptop and desktop use Renesas USB3 (only difference being my laptop has 2 USB3 and 2 USB2) and it works. I am using the Renesas drivers too:

They aren't the latest (they're from Windows 7) but they do work flawlessly so I haven't bothered upgrading.

Actually, he's dead on. Compared to old, rotary phones, today's phone allow us to see missed messages and missed calls. It brings us information, much like the new Start Screen does compared to the old Start Menu.

Jesus H Christ. Are you intentionally being dense or is this more flamebait? Not only does that not square with reality, it also contradicts your prior point that you only need the SS for search and app launching...Make up your fraking mind.

I thought we were on Neowin? Isn't it like the rule here for threads to be derailed

But yeah it is the wrong topic lol.
