Nvidia display driver has stopped responding

I just started having this issue again, the screen goes black and then comes back with a message from windows indicating Nvidia Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 310.90 stopped responding and has recovered. It has been over 2 years since I have seen this error, and it was corrected by configuring physx to use the card installed as opposed to automatically choosing. is this a bug with the new version or is there something else amok? Using version 310.90 which is the latest released.
