head to a specific subreddit, problem solved. the type of subreddit will dictate the type of lurker and user - aka, I hang out alot in the linux/webupd8/LAS/dota/purge/ subreddit, and the level of conversations are mature and insightful, no one is rude or a fanboy, people talk about what got shared, period. Reddit is a simple case of pick ya poison, don't have over realistic expectations all subreddit, some just attract the weirder and ruder people than most

The best one on reddit has to be

There is a line and Reddit has crossed it, I am using the site less and less now as people seem to be posting disgusting pictures in the comments, such as decapitated pigs, children with diseases that has open sores, pics of near decapitations with chainsaws.

Reddit enhancement, block that stuff. Problem solved.

What make's reddit so popular is a) anonymity b) almost no rules (varies on subreddit). c) mob rule

This means there's a lot of useless junk, however there are amazing gems of great stuff, personal life experience, informative useful information.

The FrontPage shows a mix of hot topics across multiple subreddits, so when a person links from a web page, what most people don't realize there not one culture of reddit, subreddit's can have very different culture's and it's own rules different from each other.

Example, just compare /Askscience vs /Aww (cute animal pics) vs /Gonewild (Adults Only).

Any of the political and religious based subreddit's are walking in to a lions den.

One of my personal subreddit communites is /Abaondedpron which has zero porn, it's just urban exploration / abandoned buildings pics.

Those extreme comments are meant to offend, so yes we are talking about personal offense. Being offended is a personal issue and those comments ONLY have power when it's taken offensively. Ignoring people who make offensive statements is the most productive way to counter such people. Yes some countries have laws against such ways but we're talking about an Internet site, a vastly different aspect. And yes I do believe someone's privacy trumps being personally offended. You don't have a Right to NOT be offended.

Harassment, intimidation, incitement and assault (non-physical) are not the result of people simply being "offended" and you very well know that.

Here's the bottom line. Sites like reddit provide a place where you can be 'yourself'.

When you have your real name on something, you act 'correct', and as society tells us, you have to accept EVERYTHING to be 'correct', therefore, in most social circles, people act this way to not ruffle feathers.

In private on reddit for example, people care free to be themselves deep down, which is racist, homophobic, super religious or super atheist, etc.

Why does this shock anyone? People are inherently evil, and when there is no spotlight on them as a real person, they do what they want.

That depends entirely on each situation. An anonymous post on the net of someone saying racial or intentionally insultive words isn't the same as a personal letter or directed post to you threatening your life.

Disagree on all counts, maybe Neowin would be more to his liking?

There is a reason I don't even bother to view comments left on Reddit. I look at the posted material, but not comments. I used to read the comments, but it's quite easily seen that most people are just jackasses and it's a waste of time.
The only time I do read comments, are on gaming posting where I'm trying to get more information about something. But I couldn't care less about what people think about 99% of any articles, videos, or images posted.

The issue I have with Reddit, is that the first time you go to reddit.com it looks like a total cluster-****.

The internet is just like that anymore. People who disagree with your philosophy or religion or your opinion attack instead of discuss... and then when the discussion has run its course, they continue to rail.

I completely agree with Shatner. My rights end where your's begins. Some things like hate and racism should never be tolerated. I will never post anywhere that allows that.
