Woman Dies After Drinking 18 Pints of Coca-Cola

Recommended Posts

A mum's addiction to drinking 18 pints of Coca-Cola a day probably killed her, a coroner has ruled.

Natasha Harris, mother of eight, suffered a cardiac arrest after guzzling more than 50,000 pints of the soft drink over eight years.

Her dependence on it also led to the loss of her teeth - and one of her kids being born without tooth enamel.

Her partner Christopher Hodgkinson said: ?I didn?t ever think about the Coke. I never considered it would do any harm to a person. It?s just a soft drink, just like drinking water. I didn?t think a drink?s going to kill you.?

He went on to explain how Natasha got hooked and said: ?She would get moody and get headaches if she didn?t have any Coke and also feel low in energy.?

The 30-year-old?s family said labels on the bottles do not contain warnings about the drink?s possible addictiveness.

Christopher?s mother, Vivien Hodgkinson, said Natasha had ?withdrawal symptoms? and would go ?crazy? if the soft drink ran out.

Christopher discovered her at their home in Invercargill, New Zealand, slumped in the bathroom and gasping for air in February 2010.

He told the inquest how her health had deteriorated in the time leading up to her death.

He said: ?She had no energy and was feeling sick all the time. She would get up and vomit in the morning.?

Coroner David Crerar said: ?I find that, when all of the available evidence is considered, were it not for the consumption of very large quantities of Coke by Natasha Harris, it is unlikely that she would have died when she died and how she died".

FYI drinking too much water can kill you M. Hodgkinson.

There's probably some other factors involved. Not saying Coca-Cola is good for you at all, lol.

Not sure how much 18 pints is, but I've known many friends to drink a 12 pack to a 24 pack of cans a day.

One friend of mine drank so much of it while gaming he was getting really fat, so he switched to Diet Coke, but then found out that it was even worse for you so he switched to Coke Zero I think it was.

I've heard stories about putting a metal bold into a cup of Coke, and the Coke will eat it away eventually. So what does that mean for your body? lol.

I'm not so sure. That's an insane amount to be drinking regularly.

One can a day and i feel sick after 3 or 4 days. I usually drink one can of soft drink every week at most.

Hmm, so 18 pints turns out to probably be around a 24 pack of cans.

Doesn't seem like a lot to me, but that much every day over a period of time,

definitely will do some damage I suppose.

It's much like smoking, a pack a day doesn't seem like much until you get lung cancer.

I wish I could only smoke a pack a day. I smoke at least 3 packs a day, more depending on what I'm doing. Have been for over 20 years anyways.

I am surprised that the excessive drinking of coke went on for so long. Kind of sad she wasn't able to kick her addiction before it killed her.

Just some averaging of the amount of coke ~18 pints of coke is equal to 2.25 US gallons of coke per day day (15.75 gallons/week 819 gallons a year) most cars do not even hold 15 gallons of gas in the tank.

Under a regular serving size of coke the drink is not dangerous even over long periods of time but when you take something and do it excessively then it can become dangerous (eating too much bread, drinking too much milk, water, juice, eating too many vegetables, fruits, meat, etc.)

That's 192 ounces, doctors usually recommend drinking 64 ounces of water per day, and most people don't even get that in!

I think you guys are overlooking the phosphoric acid, it is very harmful to the human body, especially in those quantities.

That's a big factor and probably what destroyed her and child's teeth. Phosphoric acid binds with calcium and magnesium in the body, and not only that, but those two elements are integral in regulating blood sugar. Considering she was regularly getting nearly 1 kilo of sugar from the coke alone, there was no way she could keep her blood chemistry in check for long.

Frivolous lawsuit in 3, 2 ...

You're looking at 9-18 pints, or 1-2 gallons of soda. (12 or 24 pack, respectively)

I drank 55 cans of pepsi in one day for a dare so I can get money to help pay for soem care for a dog I had. I got 120 bucks and that was enough to pay for it.... I was totally messed up for 2 days but it was worth it to help the pupper.

So 12 fluid ounces, multiplied by 55 cans...

12 * 55 = 660oz, which translates to 41.25 pints of pepsi.

Or just over 5 gallons...

$120... for "some dog", as you put it.

Guess life can be put into dollars.

(please correct my math if I'm wrong here at all, because I don't want to be right)

And nothing of value was lost.

My sentiments exactly.

You know what? It's 2013... We ALL know how bad soda is for you.... And the woman's husband is complaining that there were no warnings on the cans about it being bad for your health... Is he high???
