display power issues

Recommended Posts

I am having issues with my display(s). I have a radeon 7950, windows 7, 750W power supply, 12gb ram, and a 256gb samsung 830 SSD. The issue is that sometimes, instead of going to sleep or power saving mode, the monitors will turn black but the backlight will still be on. I used to have a single monitor, and it did this then as well. I have since gotten a second monitor (both are samsung syncmaster 27" ), and the problem occurs for both, so I don't think it's related to the displays. I have updated to the newest catalyst drivers, but the problem remains. I have checked the power settings and my computer is set to turn the monitors off after 10 minutes but not sleep. Has anybody else experienced this or does anybody know of things I can try? Also, if I've posted this in the wrong place, please let me know where the most appropriate place to post it is. Thanks in advance for any help.

Should of went with Nvidia... But seriously,

Could be your monitors arnt supported by your card. I would find or borrow a different brand of monitor to test if that works. If not, then it's you card.

Sounds like you have screensaver set to blank screen, but doesn't explain why the display off timeout is not working

What does advanced power settings for the profile you are using say ?

I have this problem with Windows 7 as well on my laptop. Screensaver setting doesn't matter (blank, mystify, pictures, etc) but sometimes after the monitor and backlight turn off due to the timeout, the screen will turn back on with no screensaver showing (black screen + backlight). I'm not sure if it is another app causing it in my case or what.

I have the screensaver off (set to none) and in advanced, the "Turn off display after" is set to 10 minutes.

I'm pretty sure I've checked all of the appropriate settings within windows, now I believe there is something (driver or service) that is keeping the monitor on. I checked powercfg via command prompt to see what devices have the ability to keep sleep from happening, and it was just the keyboard, mouse, and NIC. Also, I forgot to mention this earlier, but sometimes (very rarely) the monitors do turn off properly, but I can't seem to figure out why.

Thanks for your help!
