Online media server

Is there any "web software" out there that will turn my webserver into a media server where me and my friends can stream/download movies from the harddrive online ?

What I want is a private website where I can access my media files to play or download!

I like plex. I just found it recently. I thought you could only share via LAN though, unless your friends create their own account.

According to myplex account, I can share any media within my plex server to anyone and send them a link which is viewable anywhere as long as they have a plex server or plex media center. So technically yes they would have an account if they had PMS/PMC installed.
