Ubuntu just announced a tablet OS

Recommended Posts

Yea, screw that. Doesnt sound like it is worth the trouble. Thanks for the info.

Maybe once the Ubuntu tablets hit the shelves the devs might be able to take the bootloader and drivers and make it easier for other tablets to run it too

Fingers crossed anyway, Ubuntu on a tablet would be very nice

And if you haven't tried it already, Team EOS3 Build #81 JellyBean and KAT Kernel #69 turn the TF101 into a flying machine

well considering that the ubuntu os uses the same drivers as android from what I've heard, it shouldn't be too hard to port it to other devices :)

I have not really turned on my transformer in a looong time. Running an earlier AOKP JB build ATM. But I will give this a try. Is #81 4.2.1 or 4.2.2?

and better yet. as the video stated the UI steps up to the tablet UI if you plug your phone into a tablet (like you can do with the tabfone) then steps up again to the Unity desktop if you connect a keyboard and mouse

this is a concept that i really like and am glad they are finally implementing it

Which would have been the smart way to design Windows 8 IMO. Make the tablet UI switchable rather than forcing it upon us all.

4.1.2 JB

I've tried the EOS4 ROMs which are now upto to 4.2.2 but they have a problem with the UI / launcher, unless you hide the navigation bars the homescreens are laggy, with EOS3 #81 everything is 100% buttery smooth

You can get around the issue using 3rd party launchers but I am not keen on any of them, so until they fix that, I`m sticking with 4.1.2

Ah yep I heard that too, good stuff, I'd forgotten about that, roll on Ubuntu :)

you don't even like the Nova launcher? it's practically the stock launcher just with extra features you're not required to mess with :p

either way, i haven't used the stock launcher in a long time. been using the chameleon launcher myself

I`ll have to try it again, I went through so many launchers trying to get one that was right for 4.2.1 I've lost count

I tried Chameleon but it was really slow, I like the concept though

I'm actually starting to like 'Next Launcher 3D' - really smooth and very nice UI, homescreen and app draw transitions are great, haven't tried it with 4.2.1 or 4.2.2 yet though

weird, when was the last time you tried chameleon? it hasn't been slow at all for me on my nexus 7 since they removed the beta moniker

Hmm, probably about a month back, it seemed to take forever to load all the tiles I'd set up, and once they had loaded the swiping between screens was fairly laggy

Not sure what the difference in hardware is between the N7 and the TF101 ?

idk, I'm also up-to-date on the latest AOKP builds if that makes any difference

and yeah, some of the tiles do take a little longer to load than i think they should (if i remember correctly this has to do with them working around some limitations of android itself) but once they load the first time they're usually pretty good about staying updated with the exception (sometimes) of the weather tile for whatever reason

and I'm not really sure with the swiping between screens as i have mine set up to switch screens automatically depending on where i am at the time

what i do know is that they're working on a BIG update they're getting ready to release in a couple weeks or so, so that should be worth checking out to see if it fixes any of your issues :)

Thanks, well I have it installed along with other launchers so I`ll get a notification once it is updated, I followed its progress from the start when it was one of those donate projects but wasn't won over when it was released

A full Linux tablet? Nope, not too late imo

I am Pro Linux but to be fair - what do you think drives the majority to buy IT consumer-ables,

A: Specification list?

B: Popularity?

** I like the offering I think they have all the pieces in place. I just wonder if this will not be silo'd into a fan-ship with Linux heads.

What you say is right, people want ease of use, familiarity of the OS, reliability and popularity, I guess I was speaking more from my own views than the majority, but if it turns out to be popular, who knows, maybe Ubuntu tablets could become the next iPad

My next fear is that IF Ubuntu was as big as Apple, if they would not just close everything and be the next Apple.

The linux community including devs would never let that happen imo, they are all about open source

It suffers from a lot of design problems that will be met by the usual response (Linux is customizable, theme it, etc...), but otherwise it's a mishmash of existing paradigms. Honestly it looks like someone slapped the latest version of TouchWiz with multi-app on top of Unity. I'm basically using this right now on my Note 2.

Still, tablets are a heavily consumer-focused market right now, and Linux is a heavily developer-focused product. This is an uphill battle, and the fact is, getting Netflix working in Linux is a chore your average consumer will not enjoy.

All the same, I cheer on any OS that bridges mobile and desktop. While desktop purists abhor combining the two, it's the only way we're going to avoid anti-consumer policies that separate how we can use different form factors. As it stands, companies are getting away with telling us we can't do x on Chrome for Android that we can freely do on Chrome for Windows (ex., Hulu) for no reason other than the size of the screen and the variable presence of touch input.

Am I correct in assuming Netflix will never be available for this?

Not until netflix changes their encoding scheme, or microsoft gets with the program and writes more unix software. netflix relies on silverlight technology, developed by the big M.

It is possible, like on the WesternDigital Live boxes, to write a secure app for netflix for specific unix distros. Yes I can see it coming to this distribution. But generically speaking, its unlikley netflix will be supported in unix, kinda like BluRay or DVD. (of course anythings possible with work-arounds/emulators/hackery, like DeCSS)

but you can use silverlight just fine on linux (well not official silverlight but from my experience it works just as good) http://www.go-mono.com/moonlight/

so that should be a non issue i would think. official silverlight support would be nice but in the meantime this works just fine

Does it work with Sky Go?

It looks fine and all but I don't anything yet that will convince me to switch from Android. Maybe that will change in time.

Thats the problem!, Any strategy they gain some level of success on - Andriod will simply just absorb within their branding.

For me I think this is a very specific market, Linux is enough to make my friends say, "That is cool? Windows cannot do that" but that is as far as it goes.
