No DualShock 3 support for PlayStation 4, says Sony

While we know that PlayStation Move controllers will be supported by PlayStation 4, it wasn't immediately clear if the current DualShock 3 controllers would carry forward into this next console generation. According to SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, the system "doesn?t support DualShock 3."

I had a small amount of hope that with the cloud-based support for PlayStation 3 games, perhaps the gamepad would work on PS4. On the other hand, the DualShock 4 is differentiated enough that it was reasonable to expect Sony would take the opportunity to move on. And they sure did. I just hope some of you don't have a bunch of extra controllers sitting around.

Has poor Yoshida lost his voice yet? So many quotes, so little time. By the way, if you aren't following the man on Twitter, you ought to strongly consider doing so. He's a delight, even if this news wasn't.

that's for a lot more logical reason though (aka connector)

in any case it shouldn't really be too surprising, it's rare that a new console will support the previous console's controller

thinking about it, the Wii is the only real exception for obvious reasons of the controller being drastically different so the gamecube controller was still needed for backwards compatibility with gamecube games and games that allowed it such as super smash bros.

While it would be nice to have them as an option, surely people can't be too surprised considering the redesign of the controller. They don't even share all the same buttons anymore so that wouldn't really work and if you did map them to others would make things more confusing than they need to be. The way they were talking on stage about it as well lead me to believe we'd be buying new controllers when they spoke about reducing latency, Share button, Options button, touchpad, etc...

Probably for the better. I know that my controllers for my 360, while still working, are in pretty rough shape at this point in time lol.

Something I didn't think about but I'd hope that most accessories might still work in some fashion (ie. fightsticks and maybe steering wheels)

If the protocols are completely different, why would the move controller still work?

That might be the exception because its using the camera to interpret movement. I'm not trying to make excuses I'm just saying they have done a lot of work connection wise with the controllers. Maybe the tech in the controllers is the reason for the high latency, maybe the light bar is required, I don't know.

If the protocols are completely different, why would the move controller still work?

even if the protocols were slightly different it'd be nothing a simple firmware update couldn't solve

You'll probably be able to buy a cheap adapter on ebay to plug it in the PS4.

I don't think that's the problem.

The thing is the PS4 controller has one more functionality (the touchpad). If you plug a DS3 in the PS4 you wont have this supported and this might confuse some Joe Blow. Ergg ehhh! what is goin' on my touchpad is not workin' ... That might be the real reason why Sony doesn't want to officially support the DS3 on the PS4. I'm sure some asian guys will make a cheap adapter to plug a DS3 and PS3 accessories in the PS4. After all i was able to use my ps2 controller with my GC back in the days using a cheap adapter bought on ebay ...
