Playstation Meeting games were only using 1Gb of VRAM

Recommended Posts

According to someone in the know on Beyond3D forums the dev kits at PS Meeting only had around 1Gb of useable VRAM.

Looks like the rumours were true that Sony dropped 8Gb in at the last minute, if this is true then it means games should look even better if they can use 2Gb or more VRAM thanks to the extra 4Gb of RAM.

Roll on E3!

I guess they had no choice, since numbers like that do affect consumer purchasing. But I wonder what effect that will have on the price-- 4GB of GDDR5 wouldn't be that cheap last I saw (maybe $50?)

Much less. When you are buying millions of units, prices of individual chips are much, much less

Also sony doesn't have to make any money on the ram added. That 4GB at 50$ was sold at a price where the manufacturer AND the store could make a profit. Here sony will be buying directly from the manufacturer. This cut the profit from the store and like you say the manufacturer will be able to reduce the price because of the volume asked by sony. Will likely be half the price at most.

I'm basing the number on the price to manufacturers from previous quarters and continuing the trend in price reduction. I don't have the current figures (the latest industry research usually costs a lot of money to obtain), so it might be a bit off, but either way, it's at least going to be more than DDR3 pricing.

This type of memory isn't sold in stores.

Don't quote me on it but a quick google puts the cost per unit at $120~ for 8GB. Depends on what kind of discount Sony gets for bulk purchase.
