Is Gparted non-destructive?

I want to resize my OS drive, and create a new partition for another OS.

I have a 1TB drive which has Ubuntu 12.04 installed which is formatted as ext4. I want to create a partition on that drive for Windows formatted as NTFS.

Is this safe to do?

Generally it's pretty safe. I've used it many times to dual boot OSes and the like and never had an issue. That being said, it's always good practice to create a backup.

It CAN be very destructive. Just watch what you're doing. It's pretty user-friendly for the most part, though. Just don't forget to hit APPLY when done.

It depends on the operation. If you are merely resizing partitions then it shouldn't be destructive, but it is always a good idea to keep a backup of any critical files you have prior to the operation. I have never had GParted fail and corrupt my data (other than when I foolishly canceled it in the middle of a resize operation), but I have made mistakes (where I told GParted to perform an operation other than what I intended). Never risk your data.

It's as safe as using format on Windows, but has no thresholds, you can mess it up pretty badly

Yea, I have used it many times before. I just wanted to make sure it's not destructive, without user error.
