Huawei reveals 'fastest smartphone in the world'

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Huawei, a Chinese company that recently became the world's third-largest maker of smartphones, calls its new flagship product "the fastest smartphone in the world" and wants to use it to expand global awareness of its brand.

Parts of the presentation of the phone at a press conference Sunday in Barcelona, Spain, suggest that the company has some way to go in polishing its pitch for a global audience.

Richard Yu, head of Huawei's consumer business group said the new phone can be programmed to display more than 100 different "themes," or looks. This is important because "ladies like flowers, colorful things," Yu said.

Yu also said Huawei is learning from Apple how to make Google's Android software easier to use, a lawsuit-friendly utterance considering that Apple is on a global campaign to sue makers of Android phones for copying from the iPhone.

The new phone, the Ascend P2, will have a 4.7 inch screen. Yu said it will be available in the April to June time frame for about $525 without a contract. It's the "fastest" because it supports faster download speeds than other phones. However, today's wireless networks aren't equipped to supply those speeds.

Huawei Technologies Ltd. was the world's third largest seller of smartphones, after Samsung and Apple, in the fourth quarter of last year, according to research firm IDC. That's despite selling very few phones in the U.S., where the big phone companies mostly ignore it. It has a much better position in Europe, where cellphone companies have embraced its network equipment, and France's Orange is committed to selling the phone.

Look at Razr. specs sell, battery doesn't.

Blame all the idiots who buy Android handsets and keep buying faster ones all the time, because you know.. android doesn't lag ;) SGSII says hi

Problem is of course that the handset makers don't optimize android for their hardware and then t lags because no matter how fast the CPU is android can't use it. meanwhile Sony take time and optimize android and runs 10 times as smooth on far lower hardware, and gets **** because they don't release new versions fast enough, meanwhile their ICS Xperia S runs faster and smoother than an SIII on JB.

The time when people and salesmen stop pushing specs can't come fast enough, but then OEM's won't have anything to sell their phones with so that won't happen.

i agree w/ battery life

so what good is the fastest download speed if you cant use it?

Honestly, download speed don't make sense for me on mobiles either. Super 3G is fast enough for anything you need a phone for. phone surfing and mobile broadband tethering. what on earth do you need LTE on a cell phone for.... downloading linux distros to your phone...

SGSII lags very little. I have used one for a couple weeks. Stock. Smooth. Lags very little if at all. I have seen the same problems/lag with several people's iPhones while scrolling thru contacts or pictures. Never really had a big deal with the minor lag older Androids had anyway. So what, takes a split second longer to load a screen. Its not a game killer or a big issue at all.

And love how you called people who buy Android idiots..... /s

So no one uploads photos/videos while using 3g/4g? Android handsets also have Torrent clients and I know people who download files that way. Not to mention using phones for your personal email and downloading large attachments

Didn't know sony optimized android for their phone, but then again, probably all manufacturers have to do some in-customization, to what extent, like you said, probably sony goes teh deepest.

I can see where Apple's next lawsuit will be aimed. :D

Actually I didn't, only the ones who buy from terrible OEMs who don't optimize the software and who then go on and keep buying new models with better top end spcs because they have to have the fastest because their phone isn't fast enough, and then they go on forums and brag about how android doesn't lag, yet they're still waiting for the SGSIV to be even faster....

Sure they do. Ad the couple of seconds it takes to upload a photo with 3G badly warrants the absolute need to have LTE. 3 is already fast enough for large attachments and all that crap. And tormenting on our ponies just ridiculous anyway.

Probably has the world's shortest battery too  I don't care so much for speed anymore, as others have said that is greatly dependant of the network/carrier your on and in terms of general speed most modern handsets are plenty fast already. Battery tech is the new holy grail, whoever can nail that will be king of the smartphones. As to using Apple as inspiration? Well Apple calls that stealing their hard work and their lawyers will be calling Huawei shortly....

All of which (you've conveniently left out), is simply your opinion. Not fact.

or based on experience from hundreds of people.

Which equates to not really as extreme as you make it sound when compared to the experience of millions. Ultimately, its still simply your opinion. Even more so with regards to what you believe is acceptable data speed on a cellular network.

Well look at the forum posts of all these top end phone buyers. pretty much EVERY one of them falls in line with what I say, they buy them because they're faster, but they don't know why they need a faster phone, and of course there's no lag or slowdown on their current top of the line phone.

And there's a reason why Google commends Sony on the work they do with android while they never mention samsung despite them being the top seller of android by many times.

People also use their cell phone as their main internet connection.

As soon as I read about Android lag, I give up on a post. Have had 4 different Android handsets from the ridiculously cheap to the absolute top end. Never experienced lag, at all, on any.

As for this phone... Fastest "in theory" in the world is more accurate because if no network can deliver those speeds, the spec becomes irrelevant. What are the other features like?

I find that hard to believe. all handsets have lag, android, ios, BB, WP. all of them. the degree varies of course. But unless those 4 android handsets are all top end handsets in the last 6 months. you've definitely had lag

of course the name lag is a misnomer anyway. as it's not really lag, but it acted like lag on early android handsets, especially on the lock screen where the slide to unlock would "lag" behind our finger as opposed to iOS which since the start was very accurate on following your motion. more commonly it's simply the phone "freezing" up for second or less as you switch between stuff.

Also how does network speed make the phone any slower... does th speed of your Internet connection change the speed of your computer and make your games run on lower settings ? there's some crazy arguments here.

I have NEVER seen anyone do that, or heard of anyone do that.

I guess because you've never seen this done, it must mean it doesn't exist. Glad we cleared that up

it also doesn't make sense, MBB has lower BW limits than any other BB, well most BB over here don't have any, its heavily effected by amount of connected users, tethered phones are terrible modems/routers, it far more expensive than any other solution. latency is a bitch.

There's just no good reason to use MBB as your main BB, unless it's your only option, in which case you probably don't have access to LTE anyway as you're way out in somewhere you're lucky to get 2.5G speeds when the weather is perfect for it.
