Carrie Fisher was briefly hospitalised in Los Angeles in recent days, her spokesperson has confirmed.

The Star Wars actress apparently sought medical treatment due to suffering a bipolar episode while onboard a Caribbean cruise ship last week.

Her spokesperson told ET Online: "There was a medical incident related to Carrie Fisher's bipolar disorder.

"She went to the hospital briefly to adjust her medication and is feeling much better now. Fisher is currently in Los Angeles."

Fisher has spoken openly about her struggles with bipolar disorder in the past, having admitted that she occasionally undergoes electroshock therapy to treat the illness.

"[Electroshock] just puts you to sleep. There's no convulsions," Fisher said of her drastic treatment. "It actually really helps; I don't have to take as much medication. It gets a bad rap. The only way it's showed in films is as a punishment

The star has also been in the news lately for expressing interest in playing Princess Leia once again in director JJ Abrams's upcoming Star Wars Episode 7.

Maybe they should write her disorder into her Star Wars character.

ECT does cause mild convulsion but the patient is given a shot of Sodium pentathol to place the patient in a twilight type sleep before it is done.

I mean they could definitely work some force lightning into the plot to put her to sleep....
