KB2670838 & Windows 7 Ultimate reliability issues

Recommended Posts

KB2670838 is such a PITA. I've applied it on Acer Aspire AX3810 which is up to date with gfx drivers & windows updates. Since installing the patch, it has given me nothing but problems. Although no single process hogs resources after the update, the system is sluggish in general and opening any Windows utilities such as task manager, services, etc or 3rd party programmes makes the computer hang. When I eventually get to open task manager, it shows normal CPU usage.

When booting the system after the patch, sidebar.exe usage was fluctuating and after killing it, the sluggishness disappeared then then another issue. When viewing certain sites, the text appears to be blurry when viewed in Firefox. Turning off 'Use hardware acceleration when available' in Firefox fixes this issue but what bugs me this option has always been enabled and I've never had the text blurring issue until after the patch.

I've uninstalled the patch and sidebar now loads fine like it always has. I use a few gadgets such as the default clock/calendar as well as 2 3rd party gadgets CPU Usage & Network Meter. Has anyone else experienced similar reliability issues with this patch and any advice on how to troubleshoot this?

Same issues as you - experienced mainly by browsers (Chrome, IE) hanging on scroll, edit of fields and forms, button click etc. Uninstalling the update fixed the problem so thanks for that.

I'm using a Sony VAIO S (about 12 months old)

So, when is ie 10 coming to windows update?

Working fine on my end. Haven't had a problem except for IE10 not installing properly through Windows Update...but a manual reinstall from the downloaded full version fixed that for me. Smooth as butter since. (Y)

It is affecting AMD and Intel's Video devices only. I have it isnatalled but I cannot install IE 10. I get nothing but errors. I will try again when it gets on Windows Update. MS is pushing it to people that used the Dev version first and then over the next several weeks it will be available for everyone that wants it.

Seems like this is mainly affecting machines which have integrated graphics cards. I did a system restore and in the subsequent Windows update, hid this update. I would recommend anyone using an old'ish integrated gfx card who is having issues with the update to do the same. Didn't have any issues prior to this update so I'm not missing out on much.

I've deployed the update as well as IE 10 at work without any issues. For the record, we're using Dell machines with either Intel or AMD GPUs.

Look at the above. My screen was turning black for no reason, Aero would stop. My mouse would freeze up and when I got a BSOD, I said enough is enough. I have not had a problem since removing those 4 patches which are all pre regs for IE 10 that I will not use. The procedure in the post tells you how to block IE 10 from either being pushed by WU or downloaded. I just do not think IE 10 is ready for 7. It was quite fast while I had it though.
