U.S.D.A. May Approve Horse Slaughter Plant

Recommended Posts

The United States Department of Agriculture is likely to approve a horse slaughtering plant in New Mexico in the next two months, which would allow equine meat suitable for human consumption to be produced in the United States for the first time since 2007.

The plant, in Roswell, N.M., is owned by Valley Meat Company, which sued the U.S.D.A. and its Food Safety and Inspection Service last fall over the lack of inspection services for horses going to slaughter. Horse meat cannot be processed for human consumption in the United States without inspection by the U.S.D.A., so horses destined for that purpose have been shipped to places like Mexico and Canada for slaughter.

Justin DeJong, a spokesman for the agriculture department, said that ?several? companies had asked the agency to re-establish inspection of horses for slaughter. ?These companies must still complete necessary technical requirements and the F.S.I.S. must complete its inspector training,? he wrote in an e-mail referring to the food inspection service.

He said the Obama administration was urging Congress to reinstate an effective ban on the production of horse meat for human consumption that lapsed in 2011.

Yea, sorry. No horse for me. I consider a horse a kind of pet. Not food. I wouldnt eat a cat or dog either.

When it all comes down to it, Meat is Meat, doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it's safe

I don't really care, but still don't know if I'd actually eat horse or not. But when ya think about it, meat is meat.

The main reason why we seem to not really like the idea, is cuz in the old days we treated horses as transportation and still do.

If we had of used cows in that manner, we probably wouldn't be eating them either.

I'm sure there's countries that don't eat cow cuz they are used for things and therefore basically pets, how we think of horses.

Personally I think it was wrong to ever use horses like we do, or use any animal to do stuff for us. What gives us the right?

On the other hand, we do not deserve the right to be eating animals either, but it's in our nature and also animals nature to eat other animals.

A horse is a pet in the same way a cow and a sheep is a pet.

We used and still use ox for transportation like horses. And while the majority of "ox" meat sold magically changed sex in the slaughterhouse (ox meat is better and more exclusive than cox) all the good steaks are ox meat.

I know people who have houses, but even they are OK with eating them. House meat is very healthy, and while it would be my first choice, it is definitely a farm animal that is very acceptable to farm for food.

No comparison to cats and dogs!

This is one reason I only eat Chicken at Wendy's or what I think is chicken. I know it is not horse meat though.

But what could it be, though? The possibilities boggle the mind.

People need to get over this stuff. Horse is pretty good - lean and tasty. So are other non-traditional meats & game; bison, bear, wild hog, woodchuck, frog legs, snake etc.
