Drive-Thru Prayer Service

Drive-thru food, drive-thru coffee but drive-thru prayer?

"We ask them, 'How may we pray for you?" said Pastor Faith Cummings of the Living Streams Church in Phoenix, where she's served for more than five years.

Drive by Glendale Avenue and Central Avenue in Phoenix between the hours of 3:30 and 5:30 in the afternoon, and signs for a free prayer service will appear on the side of the street. Next to the signs are a couple of volunteers positioned under an awning, waiting for their next customers.

"We sit out there, and people can just drive into that driveway," said Cummings. "And when they do, we ask them what they need prayer for. They share whatever their personal concerns are, and we pray for them."

It's a service that Living Streams has offered for two years, and it's growing, said Cummings. High school students as well as parents have used the service, she said.

"Some of them are people who believe in God already, and many of them are people who have no orientation that way but just because of their circumstances they are looking to see if God would be interested," Cummings said.

Cummings said the idea for drive-thru prayers sprang from hers and a colleague's desire to work in the community.

"He said, 'What do you think about drive-thru prayer?' I said, 'That's a great idea,' and I put a seat on it," Cummings said.

Cummings said the response to drive-thru prayers had been mostly positive but said the church didn't usually hear back from those who'd availed themselves of the service.

"I think sometimes people that are going through difficult circumstances just want to see that someone cares what's going on, and we listen to what they're going through," Cummings said.
