When word got out about Square Enix trademarking Deus Ex: Human Defiance, some of us got a bit carried away. The name, in our defense, did seem like a rather fitting title for a potential follow-up to 2011's Human Revolution. Looking over records for a domain registration (via superannuation), it appears that this is no game -- it's the darned movie adaptation!

The URL in question, DeusExHumanDefianceFilm.com, is registered to CBS Films. While I absolutely suspect we'll get another Deus Ex game before too long, this is disappointing news.

Beyond disappointing. I don't expect anything but mediocre at best. A story lifted from a game like this cannot be a movie. It will have to be hammered flat or changed to a point where it's only something roughly along the lines. A game has a canon start and a canon ending. Everything in between (kept in limits of game design) is and must be up to me. And my way is different from your way, their way, even from my second playthrough way, if there is one. A game like this gives each player its own movie in their mind, their imagination. It cannot coexist with someone else's interpretation.

Sad :(

I think the last game was really good and was looking forward to a new one.

Lets look at the evidence shall we?

Max Payne - Game pretty much made like a film, Film - terrible
Resident Evil - Personally I thought the first was good, but it was a bit of a mixed bag to be fair
Super Mario Bros - Lets not go there
Any Game adaptation by Uwe Boll - Terrible (and I don't care if I spelt his name wrong)
Final Fantasy - I don't really have an opinion on this one, it was ok I guess maybe?

I would like to see a Human Revolution film, or Syndicate as they could both lend a lot to a film however I would have to agree with you - lets leave it alone

Some new information:

Square Enix Ltd has also registered a couple of Deus Ex: The Fall domains. There's an achievement in HR going by this name. Coincidence?

Since they are going to be making a movie I still expect a new game as well. Square needs these other IPs to keep the profits coming while they work out the mess that has become the final fantasy series. I mean does anyone still expect to see versus anytime soon?

You know what ruins adaptations? Actors. Solution? Use CGI. And use the same voice actors from the game. That's the only way one can truly capture the essence of the game.

Since you say that have you seen the two CGI resident evil movies? As good of an idea it all sounds it just doesn't bring in the big box office numbers a real movie could do.

Well, I've been to some job interviews that could very well rival the one in the movie. And that chair...

I actually believe a Deus Ex film could work as it's not about killing everyone you see and there very story driven games..
