Delivery Guy Gets 10 Dollar Tip for 85 Pizzas

Recommended Posts

On Tuesday, a Reddit user named Jfastman uploaded a photo of a receipt for a pizza delivery that included 85 pizzas totaling $1,453.

"My friend delivered 85 pizzas today and got a $10 tip," he wrote. The story kicked off a fiery debate prompting dozens to write comments such as "The delivery guy deserved more" and "Ten dollars is cheap!"

Others insisted that no one could realistically expect to receive a 20 percent tip on such a large order.

What of the pizza delivery guy?why was he given such a poor tip? "Without knowing the specifics, it's possible that the person ordering the pizza just didn't know any better," says Lynn.

"Standard tipping on a pizza pie is a few bucks. So he may have figured that delivering 85 pies required one trip?the same trip to deliver just one. But instead of giving him a few dollars, he upped it to $10. The reality? He should have tipped between $85-$100."

Why should he tip that much? A lot of pizza delivery places charge a delivery charge and the tip is optional. So the guy who doesnt make the pizzas and just drives to one place deserves $100? I dont think so

Why should he get 20% or even 85-100? He isn't walking on his feet and making sure your drinks are all full and your food is good for the entire time you're at the restaurant. Instead all he did was dump pizzas in his car, drove to the guys place and dropped them off.

A $20-30 dollar tip would be plenty for that.

Honestly though America's tipping culture has become pathetic. Its becoming less of a oh you did a really good job / you went out of your way here's a nice tip and more of a oh you did your job here's a tip.

why? ... does he deserve a tip, isn't it his job

He likely makes like $3 an hour and most of his money is earned on tips, plus he has to pay for gas in his own car. So the tip should have been much higher then that, even 3% on that bill would have been $44.

Go see how long it takes you to load up and unload 85 pizzas...

surely $3 an hour isn't legal?

Depends where he lives. In Oregon (not sure where the guy in the article lives) it's illegal to do that so the pizza delivery guy is making $9 or so an hour regardless of tips.

It is in America. A lot of states (not all) allow employers to massively underpay their employees if they make money on tips.

BUT there is a minimum that they have to be tipped. I think you have to make $30 an hour in tips for your employee to pay you $2 an hour, if you don't they have to pay you the state's legal minimum wage (usually $7+).

It is in some professions here in the States. Waiters/Waitresses make very little base pay, as well.

I wasn't aware of the variations betweeen the states. Good point, -Razorfold.

Such a thing would be illegal in most countries, he should be getting min wage at least, not below, and transportation costs should be covered, including ware and tear on the vehicle.

I don't see why he should get a tip at all for doing his job, to which he should be getting a proper wage.

But, that said, I would have tipped more for such a large order, but not 85-100, assuming it takes 30 minutes to drive to drop the pizza off, that would be well over 100 dollars an hour

Not gonna happen, the guy didn't even bake the pizza himself.

Here's the list: http://www.dol.gov/w...tate/tipped.htm

Oregon, Washington, California, Alaska, Nevada, Minnesota, and Montana don't allow tip credit. So all waiters/waitresses/delivery guys etc make the state's minimum wage regardless of how much they get tipped.

Other states allow it but the minimum they have to be tipped an hour varies. Most are they have to make $30 an hour in tips, otherwise they get paid the full minimum wage.

One thing you have to understand about America is our Government loves corporations, more so than they love the people. What is illegal in other countries can be perfectly legal here thanks to bribery, sorry lobbying.

That's why tipping should be optional and the minimum wage should be a sensible amount. People shouldn't have to rely on optional tips for doing their job.

$20-30 is definitely enough, although it would be very nice if you could also tip the people who made the pizza separately.

I agree. The guy(s) who had to make 85 pizzas deserve more of a tip than the guy who just had to drive a car and drop them off.

In restaurants your tip is usually split between your waiter, the busboy, and the cooking staff. But with delivery the delivery guy usually keeps all the money.

I wouldnt tip him a penny ... its his job... if people really complain about tipping then go to hell seriously get a new job ... I never tip a delivery driver...

They get minimum wage in PA, $7.50 at least.

No delivery person should feel entitled to tips.

And be grateful for what tips they get.

It's simple, pay workers a REAL wage and make it so tips are not mandatory or frowned upon if you don't do it. Like a normal country.

Hollah.

also, a mandatory tip is not a tip. It's a fee.

I hate that tipping culture, it's a load of crap.

I might randomly buy the barmen a drink if they've been good and I've been there for a long time.

Dominos over here is rediculous, something like ?15 for a pizza including delivery, driver probably gets very little of that and the rest is huge markup for dominos or whatever company, would rather get a pizza from a supermarket with my custom toppings for ?4 and have that or just make my own - nicer, healthier, cheaper, I know exactly what's happened to it and if someone's ****ed in the mixture or spat on it (unlike if it comes off some delivery vehicle).
