the brain vs a computer?

was just wondering... compared to computer hardware ... what would a average human brain be? would it be like 16gb ram with a oct core? and 10000TBs?

wonder if anyone has ever tried to make an accurate comparison ... and this may seem a bit odd.. but what about the rest of the hardware? eyes? obviously we do not see in pixels ... but what is the limit to quality ? (going on an average joe)

Yeah I'd have to say it depends on the brain. Like someone mentioned. I know many people who's brains are like Vista running on a Celeron. Sloooowwww.

Computer's aren't even close to a brain. Nothing currently in existence is, not even supercomputers. Good read here:

They are basically building a, close to 2 billion dollar, supercomputer to try and simulate a human brain.

They say that by 2025, simulations of the entire human brain will be possible on a supercomputer.....by 2060, desktop PCs will have processing power beyond the power of all the human brains to ever have existed on Earth.

I don't think you are correct.

You can not simulate computer in your brain either.

So we have the processor and the brain...each unable to simulate other. This does not mean both are equal or one is underpowered, other is overpowered etc.

It simply means the difference is primarily on the "architecture" level.

You know, I am kinda wrong. You can simulate computer in your brain. It is just it'll be terribly slow.

Same goes for simulating brain in computer (when we will know 100% how brain works) but with more horse power and refined programing, it will get better.

In terms of RAW performance, processors are way ahead I believe. But what brain lacks in raw performance, makes up with efficient design/architecture. I wonder when it will be possible to link up multiple brains like you can do with processors. Parallel brains!

Also, the human brain project you linked is kinda trying to simulate brain's workings along with physical state. That brings in whole physics in the luggage.

the main difference between the brain and the computer is the brain is massively parallel So it's not really a comparison of a single computer vs the human brain, it's more like 1000's of computers vs the human brain. When you process information many areas of the brain will spark up at once. Although the electrons are slower in the brain the massively parallel nature leaves any computer in the dust.

Currently the most powerful super cluster of computers in the world can only simulate a very small part of a mice's brain.

In the future hopefully computers will get more powerful and simulate the brain in a more in depth way as having a simulated human brain will allow doctors to chart and see how mental diseases progress and start and work on ways to combat them.
